Is this Belkin Vid adapter any good?
In order to get some video footage from a old Hi8 camcorder I have I am thinking of buying This, Belkin USB VideoBus II for Mac
But I have some questions.
1. does it work with Apples iMovie?
2. (related to 1) if I cant use iMovie what low cost editing solution can I use with it (preferably in OSX, haven't booted into 9 for months, doing video editing in Classic is going to be craptacular)?
3. Has anyone used this product with any success, before I splash out?

Is my 17" iMac equipped with usb 2? Because usb 2 is almost as fast as firewire, and the hardware for converting analog video to usb 2 is 200$ cheaper than to firewire.

Nope. No Apple hardware has a USB 2.0 port, and that is not likely to be an addition anytime soon- at least not until Firewire 2 makes its debut.

Try getting a loan of a Digital8 camcorder with FireWire connectivity (called "iLink" by Sony).
Nearly all Digital8 camcorders can playback Hi8 and old 8 recordings no probs and using FireWire means it will work with iMovie and the footage will be converted to digital format by the camcorder.
If you can't get a loaner, try a store with full refund return policy, use it then return it

Now that sounds like a plan! Not a long term solution though.
Now to find somewhere local with that sort of policy (I think Dixions do, I just have to manage NOT to get one of there Long term warranty schemes that they push)
