They have a few choice words at the beginning for Apple's marketing approach before they launch into an untrammeled iPod lovefest.

It's good reading.

    lol, hell just froze over.

i swear, most PC users are just dying to use Apple hardware. most of the hate from over there is streaming from GUI envy.

pc users are just dying for cool usable products.

now and again the time and effort put into making hardware and software fun to use together really does pay off. even though it's hard to write that on the bottom line.

What's funny is that a lot of Mac users are just dying to use PC hardware from all the "OS X on x86 CONFIRMED!!!" threads that seem to crop up.

I have to say I agree with them on the subject of Apple's marketing approach. Apple in my eyes is a very bad marketing company.

On a side note Tom's ardware also reviewed Apple's LCDs. Just as a comparison.

Eh? Make up your mind there! PC users are not at all dying to user Apple hardware, why would they? What actual hardware innovation does Apple have that a PC does not already have?

Furthermore, any flame wars, at either a Mac or PC board, on the topic of Mac vs PC, the first thing PC users attack is Mac hardware - you know that!

Trust me, most PC users like Mac because of the OS. Even Apple stresses that in their Switch ads. I switched because of OS X and would never have done so with OS 9!

Apple chooses to lead, not follow. I have to laugh at how the reviewer critiques Apple's past marketing and product efforts, like they should have jumped on some cheap, low-style, unispiring band wagon. Has he TOTALLY ignored what's been going at Apple for the past 5 (FIVE) years, since Steve returned. He acts like some of this JUST happened. The iPod HAS been out for almost a year. He couldn't even consider looking at it until it became Windows compatible?

The reviewer sounds like a typical "I'm a PC guy, sheepishly considering an Apple product" apologists. Very funny!

sorry, bit misleading there. mac hardware and software are one and the same in my book, as you can't have one without the other.

for the most part i was referring to the design aspect of Mac hardware. there's still nothing on the PC side as nice as the G4 tower case. the new iMac has a great design, the TiBook and iBook create envy everywhere they go. the hardware is put together well, and seems to flow well together.

So the ultimate computer system would be Mac OS X running on PC guts inside a Mac case. Sounds good to me.

Apple wins on design - there is no doubt about that. I have gotten more compliments on the iBook than all my previous laptops combined. However, in my view, design is different from hardware.

There is nothing preventing PC manufacturers to come up with more interesting or elegant designs for their hardware but has anyone done it? And when they try, the best they can come up with is the Gateway Profile. Even I as a Windows user can't defend the look of that thing. The sad thing is, we still depend on the Japanese manufacturers to do the innovation. See, this is what a real competition to iMac looks like:

That thing is god-awful. The gateway was better than that. Anyway, design is one thing that Apple has over other manufacturers, be they PC makers or MP3 player makers. And that's the thing about the iPod: design/functionality for a device like this is everything. It has nothing to do with speed and it has everything to do with design translating into usability. I look forward to the day when speed won't matter on computers and we can focus on the experience being highest priority.

With the iPod being praised by nearly everyone, I'm surprised that Apple hasn't tried to get itself into another digital hub market as of yet.

For the longest time, people kept asking me when I thought the iPod would be available for PCs. Seeing an iPod in person made them want to rush out and buy one.

One of my younger cousins got an iPod for himself and he and his older brother use it all of the time, despite owning PCs. He now wants to sell his HP and get an eMac or a Power Mac G4.

Then the iPods for PCs came out and nearly everyone of the people that wanted one but was waiting for it to be officially PC compatible went out and ordered one. I was really surprised.

It's good to see Apple experiencing some success here, but it makes you wonder.

If Apple has arguably the best MP3 player out on the market because of it's hardware AND software, I can only imagine how they would be doing if they had the 'fastest' and 'best' computer hardware on the market. I think they would be much better off then they are now.

Only thing I envy about PCs are the games. If Apple had every game come out on Mac at the same time as PC they would double their market share in a year easy. After that it would be hard to get the hard core PC users over to Mac, but we could just wait for them all to die, as the young go with Mac. Most college kids give a flying f%@k about iMovie or iPhoto they just want to play counter strike or quake against their buddies when the game comes out. That is why young people are still buying PC

I'm glad Apple is taking its time. It's not going to rush out crap hardware...possibly crap firmware/software, but not the hardware.

Absolutely agree with you. And adding to your point, mac games are even more expensive than PC games.....

The iPod is a well done piece. Expensive but not over-priced, which is a key distinction whereupon other Apple products stumble. I'm eager to see the PC sales numbers for iPod. I hop ethey do well.
