WebCams? Suggestions?

I'm trying to decide what to get my girlfriend for christmas and a webcam is one thing I'm considering. We don't get to see each other all that often since we live on opposite sides of the country so i figured it may be a good idea. But I'm not really to knowledgable on the whole thing. Are there any good ones out there? Will it work from PC to Mac? What software is needed? etc.

been trying to find some info but its hard and especially hard to find something that will work on my end of the line.

so, any help would be appreciated.

Well..I have the OrangeMicro iBot and it works great on mine..no additional software needed on 10.2.

It's firewire, but they do have a USB2 one. Check at the usual places, <a href="http://www.macmall.com"; target="_blank">MacMall</a> <a href="http://www.amazon.com"; target="_blank">Amazon</a> etc for prices, but I think it is still around $99, and there is a "pro" version that comes with more software and a microphone.

Oh..and as far as videoconferencing software, there are several options for OSX:

    <a href="http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=14474&db=mac"; target="_blank">Yahoo Messenger</a> for video only

<a href="http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=16787&db=mac"; target="_blank">sVideo Monitor</a> for video only and it is a little better, but it's not free!

hmmm..while searching versiontracker, I found this app:

    <a href="http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=16225&db=mac"; target="_blank">WebcamNow</a>

    Product Description:

    * View and talk: Live Webcam videochat -- see who's online now

    * Create your own Webcast from your Web browser

and best thing? It's free! I'm trying it out tonight..

If you have a server, you can try Apple's Broadcaster. It's free <a href="http://www.apple.com/quicktime"; target="_blank">www.apple.com/quicktime</a> but I don't know how to set that up.

And iSpq, which is available at Versiontracker, but it costs money and was slow if I recall correctly.

Supposedly there is an OSX version of <a href="http://www.ivisit.com"; target="_blank">iVisit</a> coming out..but who knows and that one is rather..uhm, strange.

If she has a digital camcorder she could use that instead of buying a webcam. I've always "extolled the virtues" of being on the terrace outside while webcamming wirelessly across a cable connection via airport with my girlfriend. She and I both use our digital camcorders and Yahoo Messenger- which now supports SuperWebcam on the mac side. I haven't tried it yet though since it's a relatively new feature upgrade and my girlfriend and I have been seeing each other more frequently. Hope you find something that works and you enjoy!

For what its worth we had an Apple techie out recently and he recommended the iBot although when I went to check some reviews on it there were complaints about it producing a dark picture from normal interior light. Has anyone any experience of the "Unibrain" on Apple's website? It is a good bit cheaper than the iBot which is selling for about £100 across here?

i've messed with broadcaster.... it's not too good for conferencing and she would also have to have broadcaster and its just too complicated. never really worked right for me either

Wow i didn't expect to meet someone in a similar situation to my own. My gf is planning on stanford or princeton for next year. I will still be here in ontario, so she will be either 10h (by car) or 5h (by plane) away. I like this webcam idea. Keep us informed when you decide on your purchace.

SPJ: How do you do this? Can you post details? TIA.

Sure, just plug in your dv camcorder, launch yahoo messenger, and it pretty much just works like that. I'm sure you can use it with other applications as well.

The best part is that you have full zoom controls and a light if you want to use it. What's cool is that you could stream live video from your porch if you wanted to. Or, say you're surfing the internet with a laptop connected to a Sony Ericsson T68i, and a dv camcorder in your back pocket (yeah I know). You could stream anything from wherever. Sure it would cost you in that geeky scenario, but the only thing practical about using a DV camcorder instead of a webcam is not having to buy both.

    My Setup:

    Logitech QuickCam Pro 3000 ($49 Overstock.com)

    IOXperts USB Webcam Driver ($15)

    iSPQ Video Chat ($17 discounted)

    Works perfectly for me.
