Can you turn off the pre-render in i-Movie 3?

Can you turn off the "time saving" pre-render in i-Movie 3 as this really taps the resources of the mac during the edit.... and the DVD seemed to take just as long to burn even with the pre-render...( I think I saved 60 or less minutes on a 8 hour render). 15" i-mac 800/512.

Wow..pre rendering is annoying. It never did this in iMovie2 as I recall. I just imported 130 pics into iMove (no-I didn't want to do it through Ken Burns effect) and it's taking forever to render. What's going on? I too want to know how to turn this off.

Are we talking about rendering transitions and so forth in the background? iMovie 2 always did that, and it did hit the processor a bit, but not intolerably.

I haven't had a chance to really use 3 yet, but all the reports I'm hearing seem to point to it being a retrograde step. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

I'm referring to when you import stills (rather than using the photos tab in iPhoto). What happens is that it auto applys the ken burns effect to every still. When you import 100 or so it can take 10+ minutes (G4iMac) to render and iMovie won't respond while it's rendering them all.

The solution is in <a href="http://forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=8&t=000602"; target="_blank">this</a> forum where it give s this hack:

[quote] navigate to and open ~Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovie3.plist (use TextEdit, plist editor doesn't work)

    Locate the entry 'autoApplyPanZoomToImportedStills'

Then two lines down it says 'true' change this to false

    Save and open iMovie 3

Now Ken only comes to visit when you want him to. (by hitting the 'apply' button) <hr></blockquote>

It's not as daunting as it seems (I ain't used to messing with any code) and it worked just fine. Why Apple chose such a bizzare way baffles me.

Overhope..it's not that bad and there are so many good points that you'll forgive the bugs untill they're fixed. Just keep saving regularly

Yea, hit save after you place every clip, after you split every clip, etc etc cause the wanker will crash and loose all your changes.

A rule of thumb in any app on any platform is that, if it takes a long time to perform the action, save it immediately. The time to process an action is directly proportional to how risky the operation is.
