When? Where are you? Are you under NDA? Is Steve going to rip you a new asshole and ritually sacrifice your third cousins' cat in a strange fit of occult retribution?

I hope Wednesday is the day, so I can just tout the fact to my inquiring friends that the iPod now stores up to 60 GB's of music. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

Feh, I don't understand this whole "Let's Blindly Promote Everything Made By Apple" thing. The iPod is certainly an awesome little device. But for $300, you get a 5 GB MP3 player... vs. $300 for a Creative Labs Nomad Zen, which holds 20 GB, is made of brushed aluminium to prevent scratches, and has FireWire and USB. I'd take the Zen any day, despite the slightly larger size. And I think I would have to manually manage my songs and playlists, which I don't really care about (I'd just drag all my music over anyway). It would serve the dual purpose of playing MP3s and also having more than enough room to store extra large files to give my iBook's 30 GB internal hard drive some relief.

If Apple can get the 20 GB iPod down to $300 or $350, it would be really cool. Of course, even the 10 GB at $300 would be an improvement. And the one thing that Apple does that most companies don't do is the high speed connection... most MP3 players use USB 1. Archos, for example, only offers two or three models with USB 2.0. Creative has it down, they often offer a choice of either FireWire or USB 2.0, and only one of their models uses only USB 1.

Lets talk ease of use and interface.

Not worth $200 extra, I'm sure. And it can't be that bad, I mean, MP3 browsing is such a simple experience that it's a lot harder to f_ck up than is, say, designing a complete computer OS

Im sorry but until you use both interface's (which I have) then you shouldnt comment on the situation. The iPod has the best UI on an MP3 player today. Guess why the iPod owns 42% of the Japanese market? Interface...it makes the other stuff that much better for the dollar.

dude, dont argue that $200 (40%) savings from 20 gig iPod to 20 gig Zen isnt worth it because of the interface...

I agree it is good, but not worth 67% of a whole new iPod (5 gig)

the only thing that gives you a leg to stand on is the size and weight of the iPod... compared to the interface, this is much more important...

    Luca is right...

now with that said... i love my 20 gig iPod, but in reality i would have been better off with the cheaper 5 gig model and saving the $200... (and/or keeping the old one/getting a 10 gig)

$500 for 20 gigs is a LOT of money....

How's battery life on those nomads? What about charging from your computer? I dunno, for me, the user experience is everything when it comes to a luxury device. Sure, I might have gotten an iPod if the UE wasn't so great anyway, but would I have gotten one for my gf if it was frustrating in anyway? Hell no. The iPod is worth it. Every penny. And I got mine for $400 when they first came out. I'd do it again too. Over those other mp3 players. I guess I value the experience more than the money....

The Zen claims to have 12 hour battery life. I would expect battery life to be about equal to the iPod (which claims 10 hours).

It's charged either through an AC adapter or through your computer's USB port. Unfortunately, it uses the 4-pin FireWire connector, but it comes with a cable that has 4-pin on one end and 6-pin on the other.

Personally, I never charged my iPod through my computer's FireWire port mainly because it would cause the hard drive to spin constantly as it was charging. I had to plug it into the AC adapter always.

Wow, that's better than I thought it would get. Not bad. Would you be able to fit it in your jeans' pocket? Just curious...

And I charge my ipod all the time from my computer. One less thing to carry around on trips. I take my ipod, my pb, a firewire cable and my pb's adapter... And the HD doesn't spin if you unmount the ipod and just leave it plugged in. Recently, it'll even charge when my pb's asleep (and plugged in). Easy as pie.

Wow! I had no idea about this! Thanks!

/me eyes his unmounted 20-gig iPod...touches it to make sure its cooling down now that the drive isn't spinning...considers putting it back in the carrying case overnight.

    Cheers
