Why do I always have to reset my iPod?

I have a 5 gig iPod and whenever I recharge it most of the time before I can get it to play I have to reset the thing (by holding the menu and play buttons)?

Is there something wrong with my iPod's battery? Should I bring it in to the Apple store?

It does it also some times when I just stop it with the remote (turn it off by holding pause) and then try to start it again...its really annoying...but I love it.

Something not right there: that sort of behaviour is more typical of starting it up from a totally exhausted battery.

Take it back if you're still under warranty.

Weird...I had to reset mine today and thought, "I've had to reset this sucker several times in the last few weeks. Maybe I should start a thread about it."

And lo, and behold this thread. Thanks tacojohn.

I've especially found that the battery level indicator OFTEN shows the wrong level (like one segment gone right after I take it off of a full charge). Resetting the iPod fixes it, but it just seems odd that I have to do this so often.

So I have a question for all you iPod owners: how often per (let's say) month do you have to reset your iPod? I'd say in the last month that I've reset mine four or five times. Is this average?

I've never had to reset mine once and I've had the original 5 gig since it was released.

I think it really depends on how you use your ipod. Sometimes I have to reset my ipod when I go jogging. On average I would say that I reset mine about 4 or 5 times a month.

Dear lord, I've reset mine twice in 14 months.

What's probably contributing to my needing to reset it is that I often use it in the car, and either pause it to let it go to "sleep," and I can pick up the playlist later, or just turn it off. There are also temperature extremes, from room temperature when I carry it with me inside, or down to 10 degrees F when left in the car.

    Probably not good on it. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[oyvey]" /> <img src="embarrassed.gif" border="0">

Oh jeez, yeah I've noticed weirdness with cold temps. Actually, that was the second reset, now that I think about it.

Letting the unit get cold seems to make the battery wonky. I can charge it fully, let it get down to even 40 deg, warm it up... and the battery will read almost dead. I've taken to just keeping it in my coat pocket at all times except when in the house or office.

Living in Alaska, I know about temperature extremes. And yes, it does seem to affect the iPod. Just be sure to shut it off completely if you're transitioning from cold to warm.
