Sounds good to me. Why Red Hat, though?

Ya, why not host it on OSX?

too expensive to buy similar hardware. not easy to compile for darwin.

not as good of performance- big graphics overhead.

linux = the best choice for cost-effective serving.

there's a nice thread about this @ macnn. hopefully here, we're mature enough to understand that apples aren't the be-all and end all for everything... it seems the blind zealots over there don't <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[Are you kidding?]" />

If you really want to get info about this, go to ars, or ask PeterB here ... someone will be glad to come and give all of you a diatribe about how OSX/Apple hardware ain't up to the task.

PCs are waaaay cheaper and, *gasp*, better for hosting. I can't believe I'm saying that, but I am.

Yeah I would have to agree. PC are the best solution for servers. Look what happened when the 'old' Appleinsider boards switched over to being hosted on a Cube. Need I say more.

I believe that when we moved from the Dual PII 350's on Linux the trouble all began. Those PII's were rock solid.

Yeah, if you'd like to be back on a Cube running OS X like you were before I'm sure something can be arranged ... I'm betting not many of you want to return to the "The AppleInsider Forums are closed for maintenance" era though.

RedHat Linux on high-end Wintel servers just plain works.

All one has to do is go to MacAddicts forums to see why most people don't use Macs as servers.

When did Linux eclipse BSD as an efficient server solution?

 From my experience they haven't had as much trouble as MacNN. I would have thought MacAddict's forums to be an argument in favor of Macs as servers.

It didn't. BSD just isn't as well know as Linux. Which version of BSD was it that's never had a breach of security? OpenBSD? I can't quite remember.

    <a href="http://www.openbsd.com"; target="_blank">OpenBSD</a>

But your question is somewhat inaccurate -- it's not that it's never had a breach of security, it's that it has not had any remote holes in the default install for 4 years and climbing.

Their OS code is rigorously examined. This is thanks to their project head, Theo de Raadt; although everyone on the project is like him, if not quite as zealous.

Applenut, the Cube was the problem because it liked to go to sleep - often. Apparently when it sat idle for such a time it fell to sleep along with the baords which came crashing down. The culprit was thought to be the power button. Those things were just too sensitive.

It wasnt that bad of a server when it wasnt sleeping, although AppleOutsider always was slow for some reason.

I have no grimes about Linux serving it, Linux is almost a brother to OSX in some respects.

I'd say good that the PC is serving, its good to see it doing menial labor

Don't get me wrong. I'm plenty okay with AI on a PC running Linux but MacAddict's forums aren't any slower than MacNN's. At least that's been my experience. Maybe recently MacNN has gained a speed advantage. But even with the new hardware MacNN is only a little faster and sometimes it's not at all faster than MacAddict.

I've always found MacAddict's forums pretty fast and even before I got my Cable modem and I was on 56k they were pretty fast.
