Abobe Buy Out???

Posted:
in General Discussion edited January 2014
The newest NMR report discusses the possibility of a buy out of Adobe. The candidates according to the gay blade are:

Microsoft

Apple

Disney

I think Disney is a long shot, but what if it were Microsoft? What implications would this have for Apple? Could Microsoft ax the development of all Adobe titles for the Mac?

Sure they'd lose tons of money from not selling software to Mac users, but imagine the marketshare that they'd gain from so many people NEEDING to switch to Windows. This could be very bad for Apple, unless of course Apple is the one doing the buying.

Any thoughts?

Apple will buy Adobe. Then Disney will buy Apple. Then Microsoft will buy Disney.

I'm not sure if Adobe will be so quick to sell out - everyone is in a bind now, so there might be some hope for recovery. In particular, Adobe could get a significant injection of cash with the next round of upgrades, all coming soon.

If there is a buyout, Disney seems like the longest shot to me, followed by MS and then Apple. I'm not up on the valuations of the two companies, but Adobe seems a bit big for Apple to swallow., especially since Apple's shareholders are grateful for that big pillow of cash right now. The DoJ is unlikely to be a problem. They've already rolled over.

MS buying Adobe is more than bad. I can just see launching Photoshop and having a litle Dog pop up on the bottom of the screen giving me Photoshop tips.

Does Microsoft think its users are stupid or something? I swear... I just got VPC up and running with Win2k; I opened up IE an got what seemed like a gazillion dialog boxes designed to "help" me, but were nothing more than a nuisance.

Hmm, although Apple has 4 billion in cash, Adobe's worth almost a billion bucks more than Apple right now at 7 vs 8 billion. Apple would have to dig out like 9 billion or so in cash, stock, and financing. Hard to top Microsoft's ~50+ billion cash pile.

Maybe, but then it makes exactly no sense for Oracle to swallow Adobe.

I think the mere fact that Disney is in the picture pegs this rumor as baseless. For some reason, people seem to imagine Disney as on the prowl for large, influential tech companies.

Good point. I would have expected to see this rumor on the Drudge Report before I'd see it in a NMR report. Could the gay blade be losing his edge?

Speaking of which...correct me if I'm wrong but the Gay Blade at MacWeek was several writers? So is the new incarnation of the Knife one of those writers, an imposter or the original writer of the Mac the Knife column?

If Microsoft wanted to hurt Apple then they don't need to buy Adobe to do it. They could cut Office support for one. They could make the Mac version of IE randomly direct people to <a href="http://www.microsoft.com"; target="_blank">www.microsoft.com</a> and <a href="http://www.dell.com"; target="_blank">www.dell.com</a> . But seriously, they've been helping the Mac platform by making software for the Mac, why would they buy Adobe and then hurt Apple? If that was their plan they wouldn?t be supporting OSX.

This suggests that it's stupid for consumers to want to upgrade their PCs from Win9X to NT, which it isn't.

Office has Clippy so Photoshop would have ?Painty?, a helpful paintbrush with eyes.

?It looks like you?re designing a magazine cover. Would you like me to finish it for you??

Oh I am sure MS buying Adobe wouldn't be bad at all for Apple! Just like when they bought Bungie..

Less games for the Mac. Where's Halo for the Mac anyway? (no seriously, I haven't been keeping up to date on this, is it still coming for the Mac?)

With MS controlling the most widely used software for the Mac (all of adobe's products, office, ie) they could cut all support for the Mac in one big swoop. Sure they haven't done it yet...because the Mac isn't going away. Office makes tons of money for them. My point was....could they make MORE money if they owned all those apps and stopped development for the Mac? I know a lot of people who would have no choice but to switch platforms.

It's not on the PC either. For now Halo needs to be the big star on the Xbox before it goes anywhere else.

Bungie was Apple's BIGGEST gaming Developer. MS pretty much put a end to that. Now Apple is just something they barely support now.

Anyone else notice that the initials of the companies listed as possible buyers spell MAD? Maybe we should take this report as a joke, or a subtle hint at the NMR's favorite magazine.
