I feel bad for Steve

Granted, it's exciting for all of us that we get to see the new iMac a day early. But I have to say that I'm angry with Time and sympathetic with Steve.

I think one of the reasons we have such strong attachments to Apple is because it manages to stay such a personal company. Much of that is because of Steve's enthusiasm, the genuine excitement he takes to showing the world his newest product. I'm sure he is genuinely disappointed some of the excitement of the suprise will be diminished. I'm less excited for MWSF now.

Steve lives and breathes Apple, and he loves MacWorlds. I feel bad that some of that excitement has been taken from him.

It really does.... it bites a huge one.

    What can Apple do?

    ?

I am glad I'm not in Steve's entourage...

I think some people at Time are going to be in trouble.

I'm sure Steve will have something else up his sleeve...

Like a can of whoopass for Time Canada.

This is a real disappointment - after all, much of the fun of Macworld is to watch the keynote and be surprised.

Someone clearly screwed up; does this mean that TIME will never again have an exclusive preview from Apple? It is an awfully large circulation to give up...

    Cheers,

    Mark.

I am really regretting that I clicked on that first link I saw.

Had tomorrow booked off to watch the keynote... and now I'm going to be less than thrilled at what I see.

I am a little torn though. On one hand, I'm excited about the design, and anxious to order one at the Apple Store as soon as I can... and on the other hand, I'm really disappointed that the surprise has been ruined.

I'm disappointed in Time Canada for posting this prematurely. What the hell is wrong with those people? I do hope some heads roll over this.

Remember what happened to ATI when they mentioned that their Radeon cards would ship in new Macs?

Well IMO, this is a whole lot worse! This is HUGE! I'm sure a lot of heads will roll over this, and Apple will file for a lawsuit.

Agreed. I spent about 15 minutes trying to avoid the computer after I saw that first link. Took the dog out to do his business. Told my girl not to let me go back. Fixed a snack...

Didn't help. I couldn't just sit there KNOWING that the thing I'd waited so long thinking about was right there....just waiting to be clicked.

    [melodrama]I'm so ashamed. I'm not the man I thought I was.....[/melodrama]

no will power...going to bed now before any other surprises get ruined. At least I don't know all the details.

I'll just go take one more peak at my new bike under the tree...I won't actually sit on it or honk the horn...just a peak. Just one more little peak....

    night all.

edit: oh, and I suspect we'll be at war with Canada by sunrise.

All right, all right, I was walking home from a party tonight and I'm all like "I'm going straight to bed, no appleinsider, they'll probably have a spolier..."

So what do I do, soon as I get home....

    *sigh*

But, let's think about this, Time has publishing deadlines, so, obviously, Steve must have known that, in order to get the story on the front of Time, just in time for the keynote, that there was a risk that it would be leaked a little early.

And, I doubt that anyone in the general public besides us is going to see this until tomorrow morning, and, for the mass populis to see this on the newstands, and inevitably cnn or whatever, tomorrow before the keynote, I think will be just as impactful.

Also... I can't help but wonder if there isn't more for us to show, the time article talks alot about the iMac, but nothing else... This iMac has a G4, both the low and high end model, so what about the powermacs? What about the iBook? The iPhoto software is obviously going to be big, so is there a camera to go with it? Time doesn't say...

But anyway.. I need to go to bed, I have a nine a.m. class tomorrow, just chew on that for now...

    ciao,

Now CNET (news.com) has got a story on the new iMac.

Steve has got to be pissed.

    The surprise is gone.

Frankly, I'm amazed they made it this long without somebody blowing the secret -- especially given the hype. I've got to believe that Steve had to be expecting a leak to be likely, and if so then he would have a "Plan B". Go with the flow, acknowledge that the news slipped early, and work with it. If they didn't have a "Plan B" before, you can bet the speech writers are damn busy right now...

What I'm really interested in is if they have anything else besides this be-panelled-igloo. Is Ive an Inuit or something?

Now there are reports around the web that the print issues of TIME w/ the Apple cover story went on sale this afternoon; apparently everything happened according to the normal schedules.

I suppose it would make sense that Apple took a risk in order to be on TIME's cover, but this is difficult to believe with what we know of Steve Jobs' fanaticism for surprise. Apple's given exclusives to TIME before, and in each case the story appeared after the announcements.

    Cheers,

"The issue went on sale at New York newsstands late Sunday."

Time cannot change its publication schedule, so if Steve and Apple didn't realize this information would be out before the keynote... then they're just being stupid and deserve what they got. I don't think that's particuarly likely.

I actually clicked it thinkg it would be fake. I've become accustomed to new iMac images/information because false that it didn't even occur to me this could be the real deal.

Maybe Steve did this intentionally. On the day iMac is released, everyone can pick up a Time magazine with it on the cover. Two thoughts about this:

    1. Could mean iMac is available immediately

    2. Steve may realize it really doesn't matter if the geek world finds out a few hours before the show. The sacrifice to get Time on the shelves was worth ruining our suprise. And I'm sure he has something else up his sleeve...

Yes, when the Kihei imacs came out, Time had an article on them (mostly about Jobs actually), but it was published a week later. Hmmm. Boy I also feel bad. Temptation simply got to me. I am a weak man.

Don't you think they knew this would happen for a while? It's got to be the reason for the keynote being moved up.

    Good point.

I'd like to think they knew this would happen but it doesn't explain why the link to timecanada.com now re-directs. Anyway despite this I think Apple must have had a good idea the iMac would be out there early so maybe this is a good sign that there are more than enough 'suprises' for Steve to announce.
