As talked about before, what are the chances of a new mouse and keyboard? Will we see a mouse and keyboard along side the new PowerMac design?

Yes, but a one button mouse is not.

    A one-button mouse just isn't practical anymore.

One-button mice are practical for people who are new to the world of computers, or people who have problems pressing the right (correct not the opposite to left) button - like my grandpa.

But for pro users... that's a different question

I think cycloptic mice are one of the things that keeps PC users (newbies and power-users alike) from buying Macs. They think that 3 buttons MUST be better than one button. In many ways I agree. As a power-user and a gamer (Wolf,Quake, etc) multiple buttons are important. I use Logitech optical 3 button scroll-wheel mice on all my Macs. I wish Apple would at least give users an OPTION of a BTO "power mouse". I would buy them if they were function and looked cool...

This is one of the oldest Mac-PC arguments of all time-a true classic!

Not quite... maybe a one-button mouse isn't practical for some uses, coupled with some users, but you can't make a blanket statement like that... you're already going to get flamed for it, I'm sure.

I've said for a while that Apple could produce a mouse with more than one button and perhaps a scroll wheel, along with thousands of others I'm sure, but can you really say that, looking at the Mac's target market and current userbase, that a two, three, or four-button mouse is really warranted? Anything beyond two and a scroll is just laziness, and while all of us here are pros and Apple geek-types, MOST of the Mac population who aren't fanatics wouldn't even use that second button, and barely the scroll wheel.

Besides... there are dozens of companies making hundreds and hundreds of Mac-compatible third party mice with multiple buttons, different designs, scroll wheels, wireless mice, etc etc. Does Apple really need (or want) to lose or jeopardize that third party business? Get off your ass and go buy a Kensington or a Logitech mouse.

Yes, That's why I'm hoping Apple will show a new Pro / Power Mouse and Keyboard. One for the Pro / Power Users. Hopefully along side the new PowerMacs. Have two, a iMouse (the pro mouse of now) and a ProMouse (possibly a two / three button with scroll).

    What do you think? <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

I hope apple that leaves the kb and mouse the way it is and doesn't divert resources from its G5 project.

A one button mouse is fine if the UI is written for it....which it is. 3rd party apps should also restrict the UI in this respect...not all do...dont blame apple.

apple should have some form of application certification process that enforces its UI principles etc for 3rd part apps.

I think the one button mouse included with all new Macs is great. That way you always have a spare when your third party multi button mouse craps out. I still have my hockey puck in a drawer someplace here and it's tided me over on several occasions (I'm on mouse #5 in 3 years). Look at the bright side

I agree that it doesn't need to be Apple that makes a multi-button input device... there are DOZENS (if not more?) of third-part devices out there with plenty of variety to choose from...

but... I must disagree with it being construed as "Laziness" to use more than 2 Buttons. It's called "Productivity". It is the sole reason for me purchasing my Contour? ShuttlePro Jog/Shuttle wheel controller, for purchasing the Intuous pad with the 4D-Mouse (5-Button mouse with proportional scroll wheel).

I am MUCH faster at most Applications when I customize my settings and assign the most commonly used functions to a button. It's not laziness... it's saving time, thus making more money. If I can shave-off a total of 30-45 minutes over the span of an 8-Hour day... then that translates to 2.5-3.75 Hours a week that is SAVED... in my world, that translates to anywhere between $160 - $525 per week in cost savings on a fixed-price project.

Sure... "Most" users don't really "NEED" more than 2 or 3 buttons... but I just don't agree that those of us who DO utilize them are "Lazy".

A graham cracker is a sweet rectangular cracker made with whole wheat flour, originally invented to keep boys from masturbating. The theory was that you should eat a graham cracker whenever you got the urge to beat off, and it would distract you long enough for the urge to pass.

My b/f's in vermont for three weeks, so I've tried it, it doesn't work. You just keep eating cracker after cracker after cracker...

As far as the mouse and keyboard go, yeah, it's been two years, they were rev'd at MacWorld Expo 2000, and they even put a free mouse under everyone's chair at the keynote. I'm still amazed no one noticed during the presentation. I'm hoping they'll do something similar this year, since it'll be my first MacWorld, woo-hoo. Of course, now that they have a mouse that functions nicely, they don't have much incentive to completely change it again.

Though there is the fact that transparent plastics are getting sparser by the minute in apple's product line. Maybe they need to modernize them to keep up with the new PowerMac and iMac design, perhaps some metal accent work.

    ciao,

95% of the desktop computer market both uses and expects at least a 2 button mouse ... the reality of mom and pop first time computer owners driving the bulk of Apple sales died sometime after bondi blue ... and along with it, the justification that a one button mouse was somehow Zen-like.

The final nail in the coffin for those who haven't been paying attention, is Apple's current gonzo marketing effort at Windows converts ... if they can't use their middle finger on that right mouse button, they'll probably use it to express their opinion towards switching to Macs.

I, for one, vote to keep their middle fingers productively occupied, hey, call it "Zen-like".

One of Apple's target market is PC users. Converting them with a two button mouse with a wheel would be a start.

And while many Macheads may not use a second button, a great deal or anyone who surfs the internet would surely welcome a scroll wheel.

I hope Apple comes out with a new mouse and keyboard at MWNY. Definately the mouse should have more than one button, or at least have a one button mouse for people that want and a multi-button mouse for everyone else.

<a href="http://www.kensington.com/products/pro_mic_d1477.html"; target="_blank">This</a> new Kensington mouse (not in production yet) looks pretty cool....it appears that the scroll wheel is now optical, not so much as an actual wheel....

i'd always thought that a normal scroll wheel wouldn't be a good solution for an apple mouse, not as 'high tech', something last generation...

now this OPTICAL scroll wheel would be perfect for an apple mouse....give me that and two buttons and i'm there...this kensington mouse looks good also..

as to whether apple will make one, i think it will be a while before we see one....i would have expected to see a new one when the new imac came out...though we could also see a new one WHENEVER a new powermac comes out....

    time will tell
