The challenge: If I go Mac, will I ever go back?

David Coursey, the executive editor of ZDNet's AnchorDesk is going to try and live happily as a Mac user for 30 days.

This could be interesting. David Coursey seems to be one of the only ZDNet boys NOT constantly bashing the Mac, so I think this could actually end up being a good thing.

We'll have to keep our eyes on it.

It is interesting and I hope it works out for him. Good press is important.

I think he should have had one more option.

    * Use the Mac as the full time computer and keep the PC for a few things that are work related.

He use's Frontpage and we're supposed to think he knows what he's talking about?

    whoa.

Anyone think he's using a G3 for a reason? OS X on any G3 is way slower than on a G4. Probably so he can complain about how slow it is.

    Maybe he has a G3.

Maybe it's because Apple still offers G3s.

You might want to avoid bashing the G3 chip until Apple dumps it.

Maybe it's because he can't get a G4 iMac for another month or so.

You'd think that Apple would give him a G4 iMac w/ Superdrive to really wow his pants off.

Having said that, OSX runs OK on the newest G3 machines. I'm pretty happy with how it goes on my iBook.

In this reporter's favor, he seemed to have a reasonably open-minded approach to this exercise. We'll see.

I tought an article or two before the current one he was bashing Apple. I was really surprised to hear he's gonna give it a try, but I think he might be sponsored by microsoft on this one.

"..all in all, my 1997 iMac with 64mb of ram sucks." or something along those lines.

Well, a 1997 iMac with 64 MB of RAM probably does suck, but you know what? I have a PC I bought in 1997 and it REALLY sucks.

I don't read the guy all the time, but the few things I have read have been good.

Steve Jobs even quoted him twice during his MWSF keynote - glowing comments he had made about OSX.

How much can an iMac from 1997 possibly suck, especially since it doesn't exist?

1998 is the number he's looking for.

Hell, this 1956 Saturn in my front yard sucks too.

And 64MB RAM? Yeah, I would imagine that WOULD suck a bit.

Pretty interesting. He's made some bad comments about the iMac but he's also made postive ones. I have a feeling he'll go back though.

    DOH!!

I didn't pick up on the 1997 thing... but hey, I haven't been a Mac user that long, give me a break.

I'm not saying I'm sure it will be great - but it's something to look out for, anyway.

    Hope it's good.

Really, I think he's doing this as a publicity stunt for more reasons to bash the Mac.

I'll reserve judgment until after I read his column.

I just clicked back through to an article about the iMac, and here are the first few lines talking about Macs in general:

As part of AnchorDesk's cultural diversity program, I try to write about Apple Computer on a fairly regular basis. Believe it or not, I am an Apple fan and, frankly, I wish Apple had won the battle for desktop OS dominance.

That, of course, didn't happen. Apple has been left with a 3 percent share of the worldwide personal computing market. That's OK. I write about Apple because I think it's important. And I consistently say that more people should own Apple computers.

IN FACT, STEVE JOBS quoted two of my AnchorDesk columns in his Macworld keynote this week. Those same quotes are in Apple's current and past advertising. If I can help more people to at least consider a Mac vs. Wintel decision, I feel I've done them a favor.

I don't know about you guys, but it doesn't sound like he's "out to get us" or anything.

You're right, he's not one of the blatant "haters," but I can already see the way this month of Mac usage will end for him. He'll acknowledge that the Mac has some benefits, that he enjoyed using it in certain ways but found it frustrating in others, and that for purely "practical" reasons he felt more comfortable going back to XP.

He won't be negative about it, but I'd be pretty surprised if he came out and said "Yeah, and even though 99% of what I do for a living involves directly or indirectly kissing Microsoft's ass in public, I'm going to come out in support of MacOS and thus create doubt in the mind of my employers as to my fitness as a Windows expert."

I think this whole thing is stupid. If you want a Mac get one, either way Coursey decides he will gte shit from the PC users or the Mac users.
