Printable iPhone 6 pre-order picker can help you choose the right size model

If you weren't among the chosen few who got to handle Apple's new iPhones at the company's special event Tuesday, blindly choosing the right size iPhone 6 to pre-order later this week could prove stressful. But a new printable iPhone pre-order picker may offer a helping hand.

An iPhone 5s sitting atop the footprint of Apple's new 4.7" iPhone 6

AppleInsider reader Jeremy Anticouni threw together this handy PDF, which when printed on standard 8.5" x 11" printer paper at 100% scale will display the footprint of Apple's current iPhone 5S alongside that of the larger 4.7" iPhone 6 and the 5.5" iPhone 6 Plus.

Some readers may be able to determine their desired iPhone 6 model simply by observing the footprints side-by-side in the printout, while others may choose to print the PDF and then cut out the individual iPhone outlines so they can emulate placing the various size devices into their hands, pockets or purse.

The first of the two photos above shows a current iPhone 5s sitting atop the outline of Apple's new iPhone 6 Plus, while the second photo compares the size of the Plus to Apple's current iPad mini with Retina display.

Huh? We're techies, thusly expecting 3D print models. I think it's easier to simply hold a 'competitors' model in a store right now. Do make sure you'e not seen with that Android phone though (< insert smiley; I don't use 'em)

That cardboard cutout I made a while back? My dimensions were perfect; I’m quite happy about that. And the cardboard I used was exactly half as thick as the real thing, so I just slapped on a second layer. Got myself a real nice mockup for the next ten days.

Regarding this sheet, make sure you print it out at the correct size. The article says this, but I’ll stress 100% scale

How thoughtful. Should help narrow opinions before rushing to order.

Thanks! I did a make shift of the same last night. The Plus has some features I'm interested in, but the size? Too big for me. I am still struggling, but thinking the iPhone 6 for me this time.

As a side note, my wife decided that for now, she'd just take my 5 (coming from a 4S). So we are moving to the Verizon Edge plan. Worst case I get the 6 now, and if I decide the 6 Plus is the way to go, I can easily get the 6S Plus next year and give her the 6.

And the cases? Making me consider white!

The only thing I have decided on was 64 GB

    Thanks, Apple! Too many choices!

Yeah, I have average (6 foot tall male) size hands.

This it my iPhone 6 Plus cutout in my hand

    versus the iPhone 6

I still go back and forth, but not getting whiplash from changing my mind any more, so think it's starting to settle in.

    Black, 64 GB, iPhone 6.

Seeing the iPad mini in comparison, there's really no reason not to put a phone in it.

I have no problem with Apple catering to people who want to carry something like this around. But short-changing those of us who don't want to carry a tablet around in our pockets is just cruel. I'd like an iPhone 6, but the reality is it doesn't offer much over the 5 aside from screen size, better camera and faster processor. It does offer NFC, but Apple Pay is not likely to make a major impact until the iPhone 6S arrives, at which time Apple will hopefully come to their senses and offer an iPhone 6 mini to replace the 5s.

Not holding my breath, as the 4s form factor was quickly phased out, and I'd prefer it even over the 5.

Oh well, time to buy 5s ... I'm a little concerned I won't be able to get the deal I had hoped for since they will be in such demand by those who don't subscribe to this phablet trend.

Not that it matters, but I have to wonder what Steve Jobs would have said about the 6 series ...

When I print out the compare sheet my 5S completely cover the 5S outline and is bigger by damn near .100". The guy went to all that work and yet they are not to scale??? What a waste of time.

For anyone who own a tablet like the iPad, why in the hell would you want the 6 ? You ever see how dumb it looks to hold one of those to your ear?

Yup - I did the same last night, and I was pleasantly surprised. I think I know what I'm pre-ordering on Friday...

The one over at Ars Technica is the correct size when printed. That's the one I used. :)

If this is the case, you didn't print the PDF to 100% scale. It sounds like it printed at a smaller scale cause your printer software shrunk it. You must make sure you print it at 100% scale, no reductions. There should be an option for this on your print dialog. See below:

People hold phones to their ears? How quant. Next you'll tell me you listen to CD's in your car when there is nothing good on the radio...

Yeah, I'm pretty disappointed that the smallest one is still pretty huge. It's tempting to get a 5s, but would feel kind of strange after keeping my 4s for the past year. I wonder how much they researched market demand--I'm sure there were lots of people who wanted bigger screens, but I suspect there are also lots of less vocal people who, like myself, preferred the existing form factors.

who cares? In the early 90s, EVERYONE was eager to hold a giant brickphone up to their ears. And most people inclined for this kind of new technology already have their favorite (5th generation) bluetooth earpiece, anyway.

I wonder what the preordering will be like, outside of idiotic rumors about 'constraints', haven't heard or read anything about limited supply. It seems all models shipping 10 days after announcement is a good sign they feel in good shape.

What about using this instead (of printing)? http://www.apple.com/iphone-6/display/

The part with the "Select your current iPhone and compare it to iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus."

Simply put your phone up to your computer screen.

I tried it on the iPhone 4S and it's fairly accurate. The iPhone 6 Plus is actually a bit more or less the size of the Lumia 1320. The iPhone 6 is just slightly smaller than the Sony Xperia Z2.
