Radical Islam Versus Moderate Islam

ISIL is bad news, but most Muslims aren't that different from athiests christians or anyone else.

Lets share, live together and not think that a Muslim is a Nazi, or a Christian a white racist.

Your thoughts?

I don't really see a question, do you just want us to share some thought?

For me the real deal is not about radical or moderate or atheist or racist or anything. It's all about context.

About islam, yeah we often associate the arabic/persian/muslim world as a terrorist tank. And it is indeed! No need to look very hard to find people willing to die. Now the point where I would disagree with most, is when one's explain that because of the religion. FYI Indonesia and Malaysia are the biggest muslim country in the world, they are extremely serious about it, yet if you hear the word "terro" do you picture yourself a Malay wearing batik? You certainly don't.

You can have absolutely any opinion about religion, you can think it is useless, or it is a tool for men in power to control people, a way for men to control women, or a way for finding peace of mind, or a way to reach God and Heaven. But pretending that people are ready to blow up themselves and other because of a religion of any kind... it doesn't withstand the reflexion.

So since the subject is moderate (=peaceful muslim) vs radical (=terrorist muslim) islam, here is my take:

In an area where people (who happen to be muslim) are living in peace, and without foreign threat, you will find a nation living just like any other nation in peace. Plenty of internal problems, but also plenty of positive things and overall a fine nation with a good image on the international scene. They might be poor, they might be rich. Example: Bangladesh, Malaysia, Algeria, Morocco... they happen to be muslim country, but they are not causing any more trouble than Portugal, Chilea, Korea, or New Zealand.

In an area where people (who happen to be muslim) having their internal problem just like anyone else, but living in peace with a police and an army protecting the public order, suddenly have to risk their lives everyday and to leave in fear because a foreign threat destroyed the state of law and order, what do you think happen? Nature abhors a vacuumIf the power maintaining the peace in a area is beheaded, then you will have people taking over, and their priority might not be to keep the peace. That's why we have now ISIL.

Now if that foreign threat succeed in maintaining the order... you still end up with a community of people hating that foreign power.

So why is it that middle east is a tank full of people ready to die if they believe it can hurt the US? Simply because in that area the US is seen as that foreign threat, creating disorder and taking over peace-keeping power since half a century, or more. You don't create so much hate overnight, you got to deserve it. The fact that 99.99% of the american has absolutely nothing to do with the actions of their government doesn't change anything.

    American aren't hated in Jakarta.

You make a very good point, which is that there are a mix of muslims.

THEN YOU GO ON TO SLAVISHY EQUATE WESTERN VALUES, (SORRY CAPSLOCK) with a tiny sprinkling of war. Well none but the extreme left and muslims are falling for those feable excuses for the evils carried out through Islam. Islam kills those who leave it and has ravished humanity for far too long already... with absolutely nothing to give. Bye Islam, in my honest opinion.

  • Reply 3 of 38

I'm not sure I understand your point. You have an absolute right to think whatever you want of any religion, but what is exactly the problem with the evil carried through Islam in Indonesia? (again, world number 1 muslim country)

    Also...

Let's think about the middle east, what about giving a try and replace in that sentence I quoted muslim by americans and Islam by USA?

What did the USA (with our european countries) brought to the middle east, except chaos and destruction?

I'm not sure if you are saying this to deflect criticisms of Islam in the Middle East (or, more broadly, the impact of religion generally in the Middle East).

There's no question that western nations haven't always been positive influences in the Middle East, but frankly, I'm tired of the "blame the west" attitude when it's really not that simple. The Middle East has historically been a region of learning and culture, and this extended to some extent into the early Islamic period when scientific pursuits became significant in many parts of the region.

But there is no question that highly conservative Islam has dramatically retarded the development of many nations, particularly in areas such as culture and science. There are almost too many examples to mention.

I think the problem for the west is that it's in a no-win situation. Whoever it deals with - whoever it backs politically - will not be ideal, and often far from it. This is why I get frustrated when people talk about America backing Saddam Hussein against Iran, as though a) the outcomes were obvious and b) they had a better choice or are responsible for what eventuated.

We are seeing this problem now in Syria; who do you support? Whoever you choose, the consequences of that decision are far from clear.

Aside from this, there is another reason why we should get away from the "blame the west" mentality, and it's a very practical and salient reason: Middle Eastern nations will not improve their lot in life by constantly blaming others for their internal troubles. It seems clear to me that punishing half the population in numerous ways combined with having almost barbaric attitudes towards reproductive health, crime and punishment, and freedom of speech are not ingredients for a successful society with a high level of well being.

It seems that this is an appropriate time to make these critiques, given the virulent strain of Islam that is surfacing in various parts of the world, which is challenging secular democracy in a major way. In some respects, I do think that the 21st century will be marked by this broad struggle between fundamentalist insanity and modern, secular democracy.

Edit: To just round this out a bit more - I am of course talking about fundamentalist/radical Islam above. However, there are shades of grey here. I personally believe that moderate Islam presents problems as well, and one of the challenges is to ensure that moderate Islamic countries are addressing fundamentalist issues in their midst. I do tend to think that moderate religion can provide a cover or a way point for more fundamentalist religious views.

The problem, in my view, is definitely faith itself. So any discussion about moderate versus radical, for me, takes place in this context.

I think it's just the nature of some to take what is true, pure and right and corrupt it with their own biases and insecurities til it becomes a religion.  Doesn't matter what you call the religion.  The truth is we are all humans, we can help each other, we can tolerate and even appreciate our differences and take comfort in the little things here and there we have in common.  But our societies look at each other through the lenses of government, religion and tradition and foment fear and distrust.

You don't seem to understand my point.

You put in high value what you call the "secular democracy", against the "fundamentalist insanity". Fine. I certainly do not value our secular democracy, because the actual elective system certainly doesn't match what I would call a democratic system, however it is a completely different subject. I might open another thread to explain my view about it.

You don't seem to understand my point, because what I am trying to explain, is that how nations are living in the other side of the world, is not the american business. But it seems like many american citizen like you think they are entitled with a mission, which is to decide how people thousand of miles away should live. Who else talk about this "bringing democracy" nonsense? This is the core of the problem. Because of course, your government want to bring democracy only in place were the current leader isn't fully compliant with your economic needs. Saudi Arabia don't need democracy! But Iraq does!

You need to understand, that yes many nations in the middle west may or may not be "retarded", but this is not your business! But you made it your business, and because you made it your business you are facing now threat like ISIS! Just look at how Iranian streets looked like, before the 1953 US backed coup! How women dressed. Just see how stable and secure countries like Syria, Iraq, Lybia were before US actions. Now they are terrorist nest. Were their leader what you would call democrat? No, they weren't. So what? You need to realize that not everybody in the world wants your democracy, and if they do, it is the people's job do bring it, not a foreign entity!

You are tired of the "blame the west", but I am not blaming the west nor the US for internal problem countries have, I am blaming the US for the obvious chaos and destruction it brought upon so many nations. Can't you realize that without weakening the Syrian president, without arming and training the rebels/terrorist (exact same people, but depending who they fight media will choose one name or the other), without destroying the Iraqi nation, ISIS could not exist today?

You may not value secular democracy (I'm not sure which brand of it you are referring to), but as you rightly say, that is not the point here. I would argue that comparing any version of secular democracy with a fundamentalist theocracy, the former will always be better for human well being and flourishing.

The great irony, too, is that secular democracy is better for religious freedom than fundamentalist theocracy. Try being a religious minority in Saudi Arabia versus the United States and you'll see a radical (no pun intended) difference.

I do understand your point; I just think it's an ignorant point.

If you think that the argument is about the west trying to impose a particular ideal on the Middle East, then you are already incorrect on numerous levels.

You're saying that the affairs of a particular nation are not the business of the west, right? Well, that's patently false on two key levels. Firstly, it should be abundantly clear that the activities which occur on one side of the world can dramatically affect the other side. You might say that the Taliban's horrific oppression of women in Afghanistan is "none of our business" (does this mean you are indifferent to human suffering?), but you are ignoring the fact that the Taliban facilitated the radical growth of groups such as Al Qaeda, which then attacked not only America but numerous other nations as well - at this point, the activities of these nations did become "our business".

On the point about human suffering in particular; I would argue that the plight of suffering people is the business of the entire world, especially when those people are crying out for assistance. The trouble for America and its allies is that they are in a no-win situation; when they do not intervene, they are accused of standing by and tolerating genocides. When they do intervene, they are accused of being warmongers. Again, it's a no-win situation.

The west ought to have a deep engagement with the Middle East, both because of the need to protect fundamental and universal human rights, but (if we're going to talk "selfishly"), because the preservation of their civilization very much depends on such engagement.

So you are blaming the west for ISIS? I'm sorry, but this is a highly ignorant claim and it patently ignores what ISIS themselves say! ISIS' motivation is a religious totalitarian motivation; they seek to create a new Islamic Caliphate. Numerous groups - including Al Qaeda - have incorporated this as the key to their mission statements for many years now. It's worth remembering too that ISIS was borne not from a specific opposition to the west, but from an opposition to the Bashar Al-Assad regime in Syria.

Look at Iran prior to the 1953 coup? Sure. And then look at it after the Islamic revolution! The sexually repressed old mullahs betrayed the very revolution that they started; the Iranian people were hoping for a more honest and representative government, and instead, a tyrannical and oppressive theocracy rose in their midst. Let me again be clear: I'm not saying that the west has never done anything bad in the Middle East. But this idea of blaming the west for current theocratic movements would be laughable if it wasn't almost outright suicidal.

In terms of democracy, I have to correct you on a few points.

Firstly, who the hell are you to say that there are people in the world who don't want democracy? Are you trying to tell me that the people of Iran - the masses of students who protested against the theocracy on several occasions, only to face bullets and tear gas - do not want democracy? Please, enlighten me.

I agree that foreign entities should not impose a particular style of government on another nation - but where is this the case in the Middle East recently? Are you even aware of how the Iraqi and Afghan democracies operate? Apparently not. These countries have crafted their own democratic systems that are relevant to their own cultural norms. And as young democracies, they are still struggling with numerous problems (including, may I say, highly superstitious religious and tribal attitudes across many parts of their nations).

The success of ISIS in recent times has been aided, in part, by the former Iraqi prime minister's inability to create a unified and inclusive government. But this is not new - the Sunni and Shia split has been in place for generations, and tribal differences existed long before the west became involved.

Well, it strikes me that you are blaming the west for problems that are not of the west's making. You talk about the chaos and destruction that the US wrought, yet you patently ignore the horrors that people suffered under the Taliban or the Saddam Hussein regime. Do you think that just because we didn't see nightly news about how women in Kabul were beaten on the street by the religious police, that somehow this didn't exist? Because that surely seems to be the implication here.

Your final justification about ISIS is utterly absurd.

Are you suggesting that the US should not have taken steps to weaken the despotic Assad regime? Had they not, would you be accusing them of upholding a dictatorship to further their own ends? I suspect so.

Are you also aware that the US did not arm rebel groups in Syria until very recently in an effort to fight ISIS? I'm sorry, but your facts on this front are completely incorrect. If you want to blame someone for arming these insane groups, then don't look at the US - look at other countries in the region, as they should be the ones hanging their heads in shame on this question.

"Destroying the Iraqi nation" - oh, yes, I forgot...it was so stable and quiet when it was under the thumb of a murderous crime family! You're right, yes. Keep them quiet, keep deploying the chemical weapons on them, keep arresting them and sanctioning state rape of both men and women, yes...it might be horrifying, but at least it's not the kind of open chaos that you so despise.

Please, before you continue...think much more carefully about the implications of what you are saying.

Edit: By the way, I think you ignored much of my previous post. For example, I could ask you a question: what did Islam bring to the Middle East, other than chaos and destruction? This is in part a deliberately facetious question (while yours is just accidentally so). Still, refer to my comments about early Islamic and pre-Islamic periods in the region - especially in contrast to most recent Islamic governments like the Iranian mullahs or the Taliban (or even the Wahhabi Saudis).

The real problem with Muslims is distinguishing between radicals and moderates. For example, a radical Christian is someone like the Westboro Baptists, who while extremely offensive, haven't actually killed anyone. Most moderate Christians are openly critical of them. OTOH, I have heard little to nothing about moderate Muslims being openly critical of the radical ones who HAVE and DO kill...

To me, that means any so-called "moderate" Muslim who isn't openly critical of ISIL or their ilk is merely a radical in hiding.

That’s a single month? (this is where I’d put an Arabic exclamation like “geez” or “sheesh” if I knew any Arabic)

But none of it is really because of Islam, just a few bad apples.

Then again, when you look at the commanded behavior of the Caliphate... (not IS specifically; the Quran’s definition of caliphate)

But it IS Islam.  That is what drives these people. (at least in their public discourse.)

Sure, it may be an excuse for someone that just WANTS to be an ass, but it still falls to Islam to provide them with a means and excuse.

(The same thing was done with Christianity during the Inquisition and Crusades... and with Judaism during the Bronze age of the old testament.)

(...that could even apply today with the likes of Westboro and others... they just don't carry it quite as far as the muslims... yet.)

It's humanity's willingness to give "religion" a pass that allows ANY religion to become twisted to support such heinous acts and attitudes.  ANYthing is deemed "permissible" as long as you claim it is part of a religion.

I was being sarcastic. Islam we are told is a ROP on a daily basis. The fact that most Muslims won't blow you up, or knife you to death, doesn't make the religion itself peaceful. It just means that not everyone is barbaric enough to carry out its demands, or too fearful of the consequences. No religion should be let off the hook, especially not the one that is used for violence by far more than any other.

I was having a conversation about this topic last night, and a very interesting point was raised. We repeatedly hear things like "most Muslims don't behave this way" or "most Muslims are peace-loving people". There is a sense in which I think we should be reminding people of that, but of course, it should also be painfully obvious to even the most dimwitted observer.

However, the salient point is that it is usually a fierce minority who actually "lead the majority" or who are the ones that actually influence events.

Take the Nazis for example; it's fair to say that most Germans were peace-loving people, but there were clearly a select group within their number who were not, and who had power. The same was true of the Japanese imperial forces in WWII - again, most Japanese were peaceful, kind people, but the power centers belonged with those who had a demented ideology about the Emperor and imperial conquest.

Islam largely fits into this category at the moment I think, in the sense that of course most Muslims are peaceful - I have certainly known many Muslims in my life who are insightful, warm, generous human beings.

But the most significant movements in Islam today are lead by fundamentalists who (unfortunately) hold a great deal of power, whether it is political or military or some combination of the two.

So in the same way that it was ultimately in the interests of Germans and Japanese to reject the demented philosophies of their ruthless leaders, the same interest absolutely falls upon Muslims today - especially those in Muslim-majority countries. I say this with the full knowledge that challenging such power structures is extremely difficult, especially for more secular Muslims who aren't guided by the same degree of fiery passion (almost by definition).

The further irony in this is of course that fundamentalist Islam is not good for Muslims - and not just because it incurs the justified wrath of the West. It is not good for Muslims because it inhibits the development of a just and free culture, and especially an inquiring culture (just see how many examples of literary criticism of the Quran occur in Muslim-majority countries at the moment).

In other words, we all have an interest in fighting fundamentalist religion, especially if we are in favour of religious pluralism.

I don't think the so-called "moderate" CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) is helping matters. The first picture is their new leaflet. The second is one of their old ones. They are a disgrace, and yet they are prominent in the US.

Ever heard of Islam Web, a website owned by Qatar’s Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs? Neither had I, but a lot of other people have, including children-

"Islam Web won the World Summit Award of 2007, on the basis that it is “the best interactive edutainment website for Arabic-speaking children by the consensus of the Jury which met in Croatia, in evaluating the productions nominated from 160 countries.”

Islam Web is also where ISIS likely got it's justification for burning alive the Jordanian pilot-

"On February 7, 2006, the widely accessed Arabic website issued Fatwa No. 71480, titled “The Burning of Ias bin Abdul Yalil by Abu Bakr.”  The fatwa, or Islamic decree, concluded that burning people as a form of punishment is permissible."

But, don't worry. The fatwa disappeared from the site hours after the ISIS video appeared.

"What is interesting to note is that the more recent fatwa issued by the Islamic State to justify the burning of the pilot makes the very same arguments as this 2006 Islam Web fatwa did — citing the same sources, hadiths, tafsirs, even the logic of “humility” — implying that IS may well have relied on this fatwa from the Qatari website when writing its own to burn the pilot alive — hence, why the fatwa has now “mysteriously” disappeared from Islam Web."

The death cult; Islam, gets lots of new young fighters from Europe-

"As many as 10,000 Europeans [rabid dogs] could be waging jihad in Iraq and Syria by the end of this year, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls warned on Sunday, a three-fold increase on current numbers.

“There are 3,000 Europeans [rabid dogs] in Iraq and Syria today. When you do a projection for the months to come, there could be 5,000 before summer and 10,000 before the end of the year,” Valls told French television channel iTele.

“Do you realise the threat that this represents?” he asked."

Looks like Greece is trying to one up the UN-

"Greece will unleash a “wave of millions of economic migrants” and jihadists on Europe unless the eurozone backs down on austerity demands, the country [country's] defence and foreign ministers have threatened.

The threat comes as Greece struggles to convince the eurozone and International Monastery [Monetary] Fund to continue payments on a £172 billion bailout of Greek finances."

    Sick!

"Charlie Hebdo has been named 2015 International Islamophobe of the year, despite many of its staff having been killed by Jihadists in January. The annual ‘award’ was given by Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC), a British group that claims to campaign against terrorism."
