Did I just install Ubuntu?
I really didn't think "OS X" could get much flatter. I am starting to get echos of Ubuntu Unity or RiscOS (something from the early 90s). I know I am going to have to get used it, but the UI is staring to feel more and more amateur the more it evolves.
I am just worried that we will end up with a full grayscale or two tone UI when it comes to MacOS X 10.12.
I suppose it could be worse: it could be Metro.

I think the embellishments on older systems make them look like an older design and more drab. I see it much the same way that home furnishings evolved from having patterns and decoration to very clean minimal styles like simple plain colors on walls. It looks fresh, clean and more timeless.
Over the years, Linux desktops have taken inspiration from OS X:

but I still wouldn't say their UI looks like OS X.

Even the Yosemite theme isn't quite right:

Yosemite will be jarring to people at first because it changes a few fundamental design elements people have been used to for 13 years but people will adapt to it.
I've never understood why Linux/*NIX users think that what they use looks good. " src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />
