Yeah, but is it pretty on the inside?
took apart my first new iMac the other night, thought some of you might be interested to see what they look like.
i was really surprised to see they had different chips for RAM. i was also surprised by how much room there actually was, and the size of the heatsink inside.
all in all, much easier to take apart than the older iMacs, and a hell of a lot easier to work on.
for anyone who wants, the original (larger) images are <a href="http://www.alcimedes.com/imac_shell.jpg"; target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="http://www.alcimedes.com/imac_guts.jpg"; target="_blank">here</a>.
i think my athlon would blow up in under 5 minutes with a heatsink that small. and as far as i can tell, that puppy is way smaller than what you see in the G4 towers. i wonder if the chip in there really runs that much cooler, or if the design is that much better for heat exchange.
also, does anyone know what that large metal bar on the right hand side is for? i wasn't really up for pulling and prying things here and there since the machine isn't mine.

Hmm...I'm impressed if that's the heatsink...im guessing the bar transfers heat to the outer metal shell (giant bell thing plus the bottom cover. Now I think I know the reason for all that stuff about making sure to apply the thermal paste/pads...

It's not that bad. Done it before. Obviously it's warm, but it's really not too bad.

are you kidding? it's gorgeous. look at that motherboard. Apple may not have the latest technologies on their motherboards but they sure as hell do a great job designing them.

BTW, my Ti doesn't get THAT hot. It gets a little toasty, but I'm pretty used it. Just hope it doesn't shrink my balls or anything <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Yes...if you didn't do that it may be a good idea to get some. The PDF (made by Apple for techs) was really finicky about this...my guess is the iMac really relies on that big bell housing to help draw heat away from that G4.
edit: nevermind, i looked around a while and found it.
and i must say i was floored by how small everything was inside the iMac. not the mention how much more room there was. anyone who's taken apart one of the old iMacs knows that it was really tight in there, this one had a lot of room (relative to total size) that was left open. i was really impressed with the design.
if anyone wants closer/better images of a particular part let me know now. i'll have it taken apart again tonight to test which RAM chip is bad.
edit: well shit. i wonder if those kernal panics are due to the proc. overheating. always a possibility. guess i'll take this sucker apart and throw some thermal paste on that connector.
i got tubes of artic silver sitting around. thank god for OC'ing athlons.
although i'm still not sure why the paste would need to be reapplied just because i took it apart for a few min.

looks like either the thermal paste or the case not being screwed on tight enough was the problem.
after seeing how heat is transferred off the processor, i can understand why.
also turns out that apple uses some kinda crappy thermal paste. it was baked onto the metal. not what you normally look for in thermal paste. in any case, threw some artic silver on that puppy and it's been smooth sailing ever since.
anyone know of a good freeware app to show me my CPU temp on a mac?

I think it was my comment about the Ti's ability to shrink balls if left on laps too long. Sorry about that...
