Too many emails

Hi everyone! I just got a new iphone 5, and it's great! My one problem is that it shows way too many emails. It shows both read and unread emails that have arrived in my inbox all the way up to emails I received 4 years ago! On my laptop I have deleted and put these emails in folders, and essentially cleaned up my inbox, but my new phone shows them all. Is there anyway to limit the number of emails my phone shows? My old iphone 4 only kept them on my device for a week. Thanks for your help!
P.S. I'm still on iOS 7.
