I am a new apple user starting from today onwards. I am having alot of problems adjusting to the Apple iMac which i bot.

can someone advise me on the following:

1) which irc clients is the most similar to MIRC ?

2) I still have a powerful PC to run a few programs like Photoshop. Photoshop 7 is coming soon and should i change it to the Mac version?

3) my iMac is G4 800 with 256 meg ram. will there be drastic improvement if i add in another 512meg ram?

4) Office VX. Is this exactly the same as Office for windows?

well, you're new, so i'll go easy.

however, in the future, questions like this really belong in the genius bar or general discussion.

    in order.

    1. don't know of irc clients on the mac. i know there are some, but i haven't used any in years.

    2. i would go with the mac version of Photoshop. i've used PS on macs and PC's, and have always liked the mac versions better. not sure why, they just seem like they're put together better.

    3. in general, the more RAM OSX has the better. i just put 1 gig in an 800 Mhz iMac, and it has helped a lot with speed.

    4. office X on the mac isn't the exact same in layout but the files will interchange perfectly between Office XP (pc) and office v.x (mac).

Welcome to the world of Apple.

Photoshop will run v.fast on a G4800 provided you have lots and lots of RAM. I'm still on the standard 256mb that came with my G4800imac and I'm finding that performance is definitely restricted because of that.

If you can afford it go for the 512 RAM, but WOW are they expensive at the moment.

What made you go over to Apple anyway? Seduced by the best looking computer ever

Actually v.X is better, but the files are totally interchangable without a hitch (better because of more features.) I prefer AW anyway...seems faster on my 233MHz iMac .

OfficeXP gives you LOTS of extra things (like builtin OCR and Voice dictation, etc etc) but I really really like the Word and Excel and PowerPoint interfaces od v.X MUCH better.

Yes, they ARE different and will take a bit to adjust to, but essentially they are the same. i.e. Mac version (since Office 2001) has had a floating palette for the thousands of menu items. I find this much better than the Windows version.

Also, interface wise, I tend to concentrate more on my work using Office Mac... I see the menus and stuff less and concentrate on work more.

In regards to IRC clients, go to versiontracker.com/macosx and in the search, write IRC. You'll get a list of a few of them. If you click on the name you'll see reader reviews and comments (very helpful I find) and you'll find the best one.

Just remember, if you are looking for an app for Mac (and now even Palm and Windows) <a href="http://www.versiontracker.com"; target="_blank">www.versiontracker.com</a> is your one-stop shop.

Welcome to Apple, hope you enjoy your stay

For IRC, you could try IRCle. Search versiontracker.

I don't use IRC, but use VersionTracker and try some out. See above posts for a link.

Definitely get the Mac version. From what I understand, it is much better than the PC version, and easier to use. besides, Photoshop started out as a Mac program!

Do it. When I added an extra 256MB to my iBook, I felt a major difference.

Not exactly the same. Office v.X for Mac OS X offers more features, and it's files are intercangable with the PC version. And if you use any Mac features, the PC will ignore the exstra features and read the document normally.

And, Office v.X for Mac is much easier to use, and you get Entourage, the best e-mail client for OS X.
