Perfect update to coincide with new Powermac

It's not absolute, but it is a strong possiblity that the new PowerMac at MWNY will have FireWire 2 on board. Now this is great and i can't wait to see new third-party companies take advantage of this updated technology, but...

Possible Apple planning a minor update to the iPod to have a Firwire 2 port to coincide with the PowerMac update. Im sure apple could do it, but there might also be other things hindering an update to the iPod to have FireWire 2 so early.

Just a thought.

Would a Firewire2 port make the iPod any faster? The current hard drive doesn't come close to maxing out Firewire 400mbps, right? So unless we see a RAID iPod....

I can see firewire2 on a video pod. Since most cameras don't use firewire, apple might also come out with one that uses the newer version of firewire.

Most cameras don't use firewire. What kind of cameras are you talking about? EVERY video camera I've seen at Fry's, Microcenter, Circuit City, etc. has firewire.

You shouldn't have mentioned this. Now people will be expecting it to debut alongside the new G5 PowerBooks that are coming in a month.

... guess we'll just have to settle for a 21" iBook

I was just thinking Apple could have multiple advantages with a timely release like that. First and formost, the iPod will again (if it did at one point before ) bost the highest speed transfer rate of any MP3 player on the market, and have a computer ready to take advantage of it.

I would like to see them throw Firewire 2 across the entire product line immediatly but strongly doubt that would happen.

Firewire2 would ONLY be adopted into the iPod for marketing purposes. There would be Zero benefit to have to having 800Mbps of bandwidth when the current Toshiba drive (in the iPod) can only write at a sustained 68Mbps (bits) (approximate). Which is a little over 8MB (Bytes) per second. The current Firewire (400Mbps) would allow 50MB/sec if the Toshiba drive would allow it.

If the Toshiba drive were to max out the throughput of a 5GB iPod it would be able to fill the entire disk in a little over a minute and a half. (The current time it takes to file a 5GB iPod is about 10min)

Actually a new firewire iDevice would make a better advert for the tech (though to be certain the iPod or its successor would eventually change over. An Apple Camcorder or camera would have data transfer needs on the appropriate scale.....

woah, thats not bad idea.... putting 2 HDs into the iPod... gettin 2 20 gig HDs, 40 gigs of music!! It would be perfect... plus transfer time would cut in half, because you could write to both disks @ once... and it still wouldnt even come close to the full F/W (I) bandwith!!

of course, who REALLY needs 40 gigs of space on their iPod? the same people who really need 800+mb/s of bandwith

Good god. WHY?!?! If that 40 gigs is just MP3's (no AIFFS or WAVS) then there has got to be music in there you dont listen to and probably wont again in the future.

I consider my collection a respectable size and mine is only 7 gigs. Jeeze, 40 gigs

Now that I think about it.... that would be intriguing... modular iPods!

Need more space? Just slap on an additional HD to the back! Have two ends of a firewire port on the back of the iPod and the front and back of the add-on.

Interesting? Yes. Feasible? Maybe. Marketable? It's possible. Sellable? Eh...

He's talking about still cameras. Most digital STILL cameras don't use firewire.

I think Ebby brought up video cameras because Vvmp said, "I can see firewire2 on a video pod ...".

And regarding F/W on digital still cameras, you may want to look at the Pro Level Digital SLRs from Nikon (D1H, D1X), Canon (EOS 1D), and Kodak (DCS720X, DCS760). I realise that the number is few, but it may increase with time. Image resolutions are going up, firewire will become a necessary conduit for downloading the image files.

<a href="http://www.steves-digicams.com"; target="_blank">Steves-Digicams has alot of unbiased reviews regarding D/V and Digital Still photography. I wish Apple would sell a "PhotoPad" that can be used to offload the image files from the camera, display them either on an LCD or a TV, connect up with iPhoto automatically etc. Come to think of it, an enhanced iPod would be great in this respect. Unfortunately, Apple may have to design in USB to do it, because not all cameras have F/W yet.

LOL, a RAID iPod! That is some funny sh!t.

How about this: Apple bumps the iPod up to Firewire2 to coincide with the new mobo on Powermacs. And since Powermacs get G5s, the iPod is bumped to a 400 MHz G4!

Since a G4 iPod would run a bit hot, it would need to be made out of Titanium for heat dissipation, but that would only enhance its style.

Why a G4 you ask? Because this G4 iPod would also have a CD-RW drive! Imagine the following:

    G4 iPod:

    400 MHz G4

    CD-RW drive

    10 GB HD

    Firewire2

It would be the ultimate rip, mix, and burn device, a portable pirating unit that can be used anytime, anywhere to rip a CD onto the HD, then burn it onto a CDRW when desired! Take it into Tower records, get a CD to listen to the audio, and RIP it instead of buying it! HA!

Steve Jobs would love such a device...I bet Apple could sell it for $500-$600, but any more and it gets into the range of laptops, which can do the same things and more.
