Tim Cook rumored to travel to Israel for opening of new Apple R&D office

Rumors continue to circulate that Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook may be planning a trip to Israel, to commemorate the opening of a new research and development office in the city of Herzliya Pituach.

Apple CEO Tim Cook met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Apple's Cupertino headquarters last year.

Reports first began to crop up last week suggesting that Cook's trip to Israel was imminent, but as of this week the CEO has apparently not yet made his way to the Middle East. That hasn't stopped the rumors from persisting, though, with yet another report from Israel on Wednesday suggesting that Cook will in fact be visiting next week.

It's alleged that Cook's agenda will have him meet with former Israeli president Shimon Peres, as well as members of the country's tech community.

Rumors of a Cook appearance in Israel come as the company is gearing up to launch a new research and development office in Herzliya Pituach, about 20 minutes north of Tel Aviv. The building will house 800 employees who worked for flash memory maker Anobit and motion sensing company PrimeSense, both of which have been acquired by Apple.

The new Herzliya headquarters will measure 12,500 square meters, according to Globes, which acknowledged Wednesday that earlier rumors about Cook's visit were "premature."

The publication also noted that Apple has posted 49 new positions for which it is hiring at its new office in Herzliya, as well as an existing operation in Haifa. The new positions seek experts in a number of areas, covering hardware testing, system-on-a-chip engineers, and algorithm managers.

Apple's existing Herzliya facility became a part of the company after the Anobit purchase, and joined the company's R&D sites in Ra'anana and Hafia. The Ra'anana site is staffed by former Texas Instruments engineers who work on Apple's custom A-series chip designs.

Israel doesn't get much props. The tech guys there are very smart.

Can't wait to see what they cook up.

As if it's a newsworthy surprise that the CEO of a company might travel to the official opening / reopening / rebranding of a new office of almost a thousand employees...?

Nothing like starting a rumor and then attacking him for not doing it. Good setup.
Now you can call him anti-Semitic

According to The Economist in Dec 2014, Tel Aviv now number two to Silicon Valley in list of startup cities world wide. LA is number three. Rather amazing for Israel.

Absolutely. A tiny little country surrounded by hostile neighbors all wanting to see it dead, and yet it:

    * Successfully defends itself when group attacked by its neighbors since its founding.

    * Actually manages to expand its territory in the face of multiple enemies trying to destroy it, creating a buffer zone for itself

    * Makes the right decision in allying itself with the U.S. instead of the Soviet Union (many Arab countries threw their lots in with the Soviets -- bad mistake)

    * Takes in millions of immigrants who are often poor and don't even speak the language, and integrates them successfully (most immigrants since Israel's founding have come from other Arab countries that persecuted Jews).

    * Creates a forward-looking culture for immigrants focused on the future instead of a backward-looking one (the ridiculous idea of a Right of Return...even though plenty of Jews could easily claim such a right across the Arab world)

    * Creates a viable democracy, when all of its neighbors are ruled by oligarchies or military strong men

    * Actually elects a female Prime Minister...decades ago. Can anyone imagine that happening in the Arab world? Even in 50 years? Not likely.

    * Despite no natural resources, creates a booming dynamic economy that is bigger than the economies of many Arab neighbors combined

    * Develops a tech industry that surpasses that of far bigger, richer countries (Great Britain, France, and of course every single Arab/Islamic country)

    * Does all this, while keeping its boot on the necks of the countries and terrorist organizations still pledged to destroy it.

    Hard not to be impressed...

To bad it's a small country and not a lot of free land for Solar Farms.  Besides large Solar farms would be to easy of a target to shoot cheaply made , inaccurate rockets at and still be able to hit something.

WAZE was developed in that country.    It's amazing what they have accomplished there.   There's a lot of Muslims in Israel and they have the same rights and freedoms and anyone else.      There really is a lot of hate for the jews and for what?  Blamed for anything and everything.   These other country's around them would really be in the craphole if it wasn't for the OIL!!! Or American money being handed out.

    You're kidding right?

The commission found deeply rooted factors leading up to clashes, including the structural and systematic discrimination suffered by Arab citizens. The commission stated unequivocally that: “the state did not do enough to grant equality to its Arab citizens and to eliminate discrimination and deprivation.” The commission strongly recommended that “a principle objective of the government must be the achievement of genuine equality for the Arab citizens of the state.” It even said, specifically, that there should be a redistribution of existing resources and that the matter required the prime minister’s personal involvement.

I am impressed at how a small country like Israel is able to hoodwink us into giving it more than $3 billion a year of US-taxpayers-funded military aid and provide it with unquestionable diplomatic support no matter what it does. It's simply astounding.

If rumor is true, would hope Tim Cook moves company businesses out of Israel and not add any support to the regime there. It is sad to see that many people get their information from Fox or CNN news and not see the real issues facing people there. The behavior and ethics of the regime is worse than North Korea. Look at Gaza.

At least this thread has not descended where I feared it might when I read the headline and there is some great humour on display.  The piece I hear they are trying to crack is a blockchain that does not compromise privacy which sounds so counter intuitive they'll probably deliver it next week.
