New 'Try the Watch' app uses augmented reality to visualize wearing an Apple Watch

Consumers who are still unsure of how the Apple Watch will look on their wrist can now get a better idea using nothing but their iPhone, a printer, and a pair of scissors thanks to a new augmented reality app from Belgian IT firm Underside.

Attaching a small, printable target to the wrist and then loading up the app will allow users to visualize different Apple Watch models. Tapping on the screen will cycle through different watch case and band color combinations.

Though the images are not perfect, they are a fairly close approximation and would likely suffice for those who are on the fence about purchasing a Watch based on its appearance. The renders do hover slightly over the wrist, but not enough to cause serious distortion.

Unfortunately, the app is not available in the App Store. To install it, curious users will need to visit Underside's website and download it directly, and then authorize the unapproved app to run on their device.

For those consumers for whom size is the primary concern, the Apple Store app offers actual-size renderings of each case. Previews are accessed by opening the app, selecting a Watch family, tapping "View Pricing" in the upper-right hand corner, and then tapping "Compare case sizes" in the center of the screen.

Apple will begin taking pre-orders for the Watch on April 10, with shipments starting on April 24.

This app might produce a negative opinion of the ?Watch, which doesn't look all that great even in the professional Apple photography. This only makes it look worse. I think it is going to be one of those types of product that you will need to see in person to fully appreciate.

Good lord, they're using an enterprise certificate for distribution? They'll get that revoked pretty quickly by apple.

Kind of neat--but if I'm going to use a printer I can simulate the watch in real life.

Maybe it's more effective than I think, though. Can someone make an app that simulates using this app for me?

This is pretty cool. I just tried it on my lunch. Took 2 minutes to print and cut it out. If Apple did this and could somehow remove the "target" piece of paper, it would be pretty handy.

Remember to report Ben Frost for trolling if he shows up here and starts bashing the Watch, Apple, and Tim Cook.

I have already reported him 12 times on his previous troll posts, he is clever though he doesn't resort to abuse or swearing

The app is a lot of fun. Was already planning to buy a Watch, but this seals it :)

You know he's going to say something profoundly stupid about the watch. Again and again.

I don't really think he is a troll as such. He is just a cranky guy who doesn't know when to shut up - and he enjoys bugging the shit out of people. He proclaims to be a Christian which goes to prove that a religious leaning does not make one any more virtuous. The best way as always is to ignore. Scroll past and do not read his posts. Slurpy cannot help himself which he should know is just fodder for the old git.

I wish Apple watch has better battery life like 3 days...I would buy it on day 1. I keep missing notifications, reminders, texts or even phone calls for my 6+ with vibration mode in the pocket.

    August 2: specs war begins

That's something oddly ridiculous about describing MHz and gigabytes in a watch. Apple has been mum on the details, focusing on user experience attributes (like the Taptic stuff), and the appearance. But you know Lenovo and LG and Samsung can't help but fall back on specs. It's all they know about marketing tech.

September 1: Android Wears have more apps...(well, shitty apps)

The reason android wears fall back on specs because they don't have anything to market. Just look at the orientation of the Gear Fit, Samsung just throw the Gears out there with all screen orientations and hope one of them sticks. Android wears are designed by responding to people's comments and that's a joke.
