iPhone and VW Entertainment System

My VW and my last two iPhones (5 and 6Plus) have proven to be incompatible. The dealer went to the extent of replacing the entertainment system and the problem remains, so the issue seems to be primarily with the iPhone.

 

Here's the issue. I can't navigate in bluetooth without handling the phone. I can through the MDI but only when the phone is in the mood. I'll get kicked off the MDI suddenly, and over to bluetooth, or even worse, get kicked to the first song in my playlist. When I try switching back to the MDI, the files are scrambled. There is no way that the song/podcast/book I select is the one that will play.

 

Does anyone else have this issue, and is there a fix?
