Apple updates iMovie for Mac with enhanced YouTube sharing, fix for random crashes

Apple on Thursday rolled out an update for its iMovie video editing app for OS X, fixing an issue that could cause the program to crash and baking in enhanced YouTube sharing compatibility.




iMovie version 10.0.8 comes a little over one month after the last update brought support for haptic feedback and Force Touch features compatible with Apple's new MacBook trackpads.

Apple fails to detail exact changes included in the latest iMovie build, noting only that compatibility with sharing video projects to YouTube has been updated. The same share sheet pop-up appears and upload speeds seem to be in line with past versions.

Apple also fixed a bug that could cause iMovie to unexpectedly quit on launch. The cause of the random crashes is unclear, though a number of users on Apple's Support Communities forum reported seeing the issue shortly after version 10.0.7 was released.

Earlier today, Apple patched a separate bug that caused newer iMacs to freeze and restart. That issue was traced back to viewing large JPEG files in Finder or Preview.

iMovie for Mac version 10.0.8 is available now as a free update, while new users can purchase the app for $14.99 from the Mac App Store.

    I wish Apple updates iMovie and adds the ability to work on movies with different aspect ratio such as iOS device screen capture videos. This would be great for making App Store videos.

    iMovie has the dumbest Mac interface ever imagined, ever, ever, ever to infinity, bar none. I know the content consumption machinery generates the most money for AAPL, but I still produce content on my Apple devices. Why do Keynote and iMovie and QuickTime suck so bad? Anyone?

    Every time I have to launch iMovie, I cringe. And Keynote should be a Pro App! Logic, FCP, Keynote. I make a living with presentations. I've switched back to Power Point and others, because Keynote is so abysmal. Ever try rebuilding 25, 50 slide presentations? Just because Apple can't execute?

    Seriously, fit and finish in Apple's content creation apps has never been worse.... IMHO

    I hadn't looked at iMovie for some time, but I still can't find a timeline in it. So it's no use for time measurements in video. Too bad.....

    And select the right tools.

    The poster I replied to also stated QuickTime sucked ... with such a sweeping and utterly stupid comment as that I guess i should not have wasted the few seconds it took to respond.

    Trouble comes when some anonymous poster claims they are an expert, sort of like the types that start by posting, “I own Apple products” and then go on to trash the company irrationally. Some posts lack credibility by their very content and tone. That original post is definitely one of those.

    Of course it still has a timeline but I grant you it is a slightly different take on the old style editing and takes a few moments to get your head around at first if you are new to it. It works very similarly to FCPro X actually. I suggest you watch some tutorials.

    I am trying to produce on movie in iMovie 10.0.8 on Yosemite for like 2 hours now. imovie is so unintuitive and terrible that I reached the point where I wanted to hurt myself, literally.

    BTW I am trying to accomplish something in iMovie out of curiosity, I am Adobe Premiere CS6 user.

     

    I am having hard time expressing how agitated I am right now because of this software. Just pure garbage. Someone needs to be fired from Apple for perpetuating this misery for this long.
