copying os x to new hard drive, old hard drive unavailable

So I had to buy a new hard drive after the old one was hopelessly corrupted and trashed. I need to get os x onto the new hard drive. I have another mac that is the same make and model with the os I need and I've been told I can put that os from that mac onto the one I need it on.

    There are a variety of solutions available depending on your OS and hardware. Can you be specific as to which Macs you have and what OS is on the working one? Also, what OS do you want to run on the one with the new hard drive?
