My First Macworld
I'm planning a trip to NYC for my first MacWorld Expo in New York this July, and I'd appreciate any advice from people who have gone before as far as Hotels are concerned. I'm looking for a good Hotel in the area, within walking distance, ideally, not too expensive, but not too... grungy either.
Any recomendations?

the rates that macwolrd expo itself offers you for the surrounding hotels are actually quite good and the hotels are very nice and they have bus service to and from them. it's probably just best to go through them.

Anyone know if the Apple HQ satelite feed is open to the public?
Call some of the big hotel companies like Hilton or Marriott and ask for a corporate rate for <insert Fortune 100 company name here>. Some of them have actual corporate account numbers, but last time I booked with Marriott, they didn't ask for one, and were happy to volunteer about five companies they had rates for whilst searching for mine.
They don't check credentials when you check in, they don't ask you to fax anything on a letterhead. Works out great

As for hotels, I generally stay at the Mayflower Hotel. 2 years ago, they were on the Macworld Bus route, but last year, they weren't. It's right near Columbus Circle across from Central Park. It's a very nice hotel, I like going there.
My other advice would be to stay away from the Days Inn. That place was horrible, and my brother even found a rusty needle in the bathroom. <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />
Check the Macworld site for more hotels any way. I'm sure most are pretty good.
How is the mac presence @ scad these days? I mean Os wise.... is OsX used a lot yet? I think SCAD and OsX would go together very well. Man I wish I was going there now.... that Lucent optical network they put in must be sweet.... no more zip discs...

know you were talking to scadboy, but i go there too. we're not on OS X yet. the chair of graphic design told me that everything would be OS X, in our department, in the fall. who knows about the other slackers.

I'm leaving June 22 for Stanford University Summer Session. Get back August 18. Therefore no MWNY

That's why I asked how the satelite feed at Cupertino works. I know they show it in the cafe there but I'm not sure if its open to the public. If not I'll watch from the Apple Store.
Those will be some of my strongest childhood memories. : )

I've been to the last 3 MWSF and last year's MWNY. I like SF better than NY, but both are great fun and great places. MWSF is always larger.

1. There is a hotel about 4 blocks away. it is called the New Yorker. They have discounts if you belong to a user group. Not the fanciest place, but I got a room for $129!
2. Bring good shoes. You WILL do a lot of walking.
3. Don't plan on taking a cab anywhere. Traffic in the area is slower than walking.
4. Don't be afraid of the subway. It isn't as scary as it sounds.
5. Don't eat at the food court at Javits. The food is real bad and extremely (and I mean EXTREMELY) overpriced. Get something at a Deli.
6. Bring a backpack. You don't want to be carrying everything you pick up.
7. Wear an Apple shirt at all times. You WILL run into mac guys all over the city that week, and it might help you to get directions/suggestions.
8. If you go to the keynote, get there early! I got there at 6:30 and I still sat in the back. The earlier the better.
9. Make friends. Mac people are the friendliest in the world. You almost have to punch us to get us mean. You may meet up with someone important or cool in the line for the keynote. (I met a guy who owns a mac shop in Sweden (or someplace like that)).
10. Have fun! How often do you get to be around 60,000 mac fanatics?
Good luck with that. Now that you can't bring a bag into a ballpark, do you think they'll let people bring a ton of bags into the convention center?
I hope they will let people bring bags as long as they check them beforehand, but I doubt they'll let people do it this year.

I totally forgot about that. Especially in New York. I was there pre Sept 11, so that thought escaped my mind.
