Got Keyboard?

Hey all. My Apple Pro Keyboard (black keys) has been ruined by my 8 year old sister! She spilled Kool-Aid on it. Normally I wouldn't let her be drinking by my computer except I was at work when it happened. So now that I have to buy another keyboard my question is should I plunge down $60-$80 for another Apple Pro Keyboard or buy a different one? If I don't buy the Apple Pro Keyboard, I'd like something that matches my Quicksilver Tower. No white or beige keyboards (puke)! Is there any keyboard that is better then the Apple Pro? I liked the Apple Keyboard but if there's something better out there I'd like to know before I purchase another Apple Pro.

I f*cked up my Pro keyboard just a few days ago. Thought maybe I could get it back working by cleaning it twice over and everything, but no luck. SO since I wanted to use my G4, we figured what the hell and went over to Micro Center. They were trying to charge $70 for the Pro keyboard, so I said ummm no. Ended up getting a Macally iKey for like $50.

Whoohoo thanks for responding! Sorry but noone was answering my question. Yeh I know it's crazy how much they're charging for Pro Keyboards! I called to Apple re-sellers (The Learning Center and the Mac Group) and they charge $80 for one! When I told him it was $60 at the Apple store he was shocked and said that Apple just doesn't give them a break on some things. Anyway I'll take a look at that Macally kb. Anyone know about the Kensington keyboard-in-a-box? Any good?

USB connectivity equals easy plug-and-play for Mac systems

*\tPlug any low-powered USB product such as your mouse or gaming device into the USB ports on either end of the keyboard

*\tThe extra USB port means no more reaching to the back of your computer

*\tBonus wrist-rest included inside to improve comfort and productivity

*\tSoft-Power button works as power-on, sleep, or wake-up depending on Mac model

Looks pretty nice and it's only $40.

there were rumors of a new keyboard and mouse at macworld.... mybe you wanna wait a week?

That would be really sweet. Although honestly I'm not going to get my hopes up because the only reason I see Apple introducing a new keyboard and mouse is with a new tower design which is unlikely.

I have an iKey4 and I love it...much easier to type on than the Pro Keyboards.

BTW...that Kensignton looks great and I wanted to get one although I couldn't find a reseller that sold one and Kensington's own store didn't even sell them at the time.

I think it's worth noting that typing on the iKey is like typing on one of the old ADB keyboards, only quieter.

[EDIT: Geez Tiger, where the hell did you buy that keyboard. I got mine from ClubMac for 29.99, 41 something with 2nd day Airmail.]

Before you go buy a new keyboard, pop all the keys off your current one (use a wide flat screwdriver), then put the keyboard in the dishwasher without soap and run it through the regular cycle. Let it dry in a warm dry place for a week and try again. It should be fine.

Wow I didn't know you could do something like that to a keyboard! It's kinda too late because I ordered a new one yesterday and am looking forward to using it because it's an ergonomic keyboard. I decided to spend $70 on this keyboard instead because while my APK was broken, I've been using my dad's Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard with 19 hot keys and really liked the way it felt. However it's too ugly to keep me from buying (beige!). So I found this one from a company called Adesso. Looks just like the Microsoft one I'm using now function-wise but it's definitely better looking. Here's pics of the two:

rather then buying ergonomic keyboards.. why dont people just switch to the dvorak layout? it really is much more egonomical then the qwerty keyboards that were thought up in the typwriter days so the keys wouldnt get stuck if you typed fast....

    just a suggestion...

oh, and robo, does that really work?

I spilled a cup of tea into my PowerBook a little while ago. I took the keyboard out and gave it a long shower under the tap, stuck it back in, and it was fine.

It ened up being rather tacky though, as all of the milk and sugar apparently didn't get cleaned out. I took it out again, and held it under cold running water for 5 minutes, pressing all the keys during the shower, to get water everywhere under the keys.

I then put it out to dry for a day (after giving it a lengthy drying with a blowdryer set to "cool"). Popped her back in, and it was perfect.

Sounds like bull, running it under water, but it does work. I figured it wasn't useable as it was, so it was worth a shot. Turned out fine.

And no, this isn't along the same lines as my recent hard drive recovery thread, this is real.

Yup. It works. There is nothing in the keyboard that will corrode on contact with water (ie. no iron or steel). It's all copper, aluminum, solder, and phenolic with some nylon and rubber bits for the keys.

Water could cause a short circuit (that's why spilling KoolAid is bad) but won't actually damage the kb.

Oh, and Dvorak rocks. Way faster and easier on the hands.

Damn, now I wish I didn't go buy a keyboard. I got mine at Micro Center. I guess they charge up the roof there for a dang keyboard. But hey, I needed to use my computer. Funny thing is CompUSA seems to be even more expensive normally than Micro Center.

My only problem with switching to Dvorak is that I'm already trained to use a Qwerty keyboard, I type about 70wpm with it anyway. I'm sure switching to Dvorak would make my typing much faster in the long run, but I would have to take the time to learn the layout and then I would have problems with Qwerty layout keyboards at school and everywhere else.

Yeah, CompUSA has ridiculous prices sometimes. The Pro Keyboard and Mouse isn't worth the $59 Apple charges, let alone $69 which is what CompUSA charges.
