Apple on Tuesday added another 66 financial institutions to its list of U.S. card issuers for Apple Pay, as well as promised support for BJ's Wholesale Club store cards.

BJ's was one of several store card partners announced at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in June. Those retailers have been slow to go live however, and in fact Kohl's is the only other, though JCPenney will be adding support this spring.

BJ's is in the headline but not in the list. Wish I could find it in the app store - would love to not carry one more totherwise useless piece of plastic around...

Merchant support is increasing. Yesterday I was Christmas shopping in Virginia and was able to use Apple Pay at 4 or 5 different places, including Urban Outfitters, Macy's, and 7 Eleven. Fun.

It has actually stopped working at the Macy's by me. Bummer over the holidays.

There's a few places around me where it's recognized, but then the transaction fails.   That happened to me at Fairway, an East Coast specialty supermarket chain with 14 locations and it also frequently happens to me at the CVS drugstore chain.   My local large Korean market still hasn't switched out their credit card readers and they keep them behind the counter anyway, so it's a non-starter there.   I guess they're willing to absorb the fraud costs that the credit card companies will be charging if they don't switch to chip reading machines.

But the reality is that until Apple Pay is completely ubiquitous, including ATMs, one still has to carry a wallet around with at least one credit or debit card, and I don't really find it faster than swiping or inserting a credit card, since most of the time, it still makes you confirm the amount and sign.   I'm also surprised at the number of major stores I've been to that still don't have the new chip-reading credit card readers.   And even of the ones that do, many don't have the receiver for Apple Pay and other such systems.    And then there's the issue of having to carry a physical driver's license and registration.   So I think we're long from the day when one can leave a wallet at home.

Sure, most people won't be able to travel completely without a wallet for some time. However, most people won't need more than a driver license and a single credit card. Maybe a debit card and a health insurance card. That is the entirety of what I have in my wallet now. Four cards, and two (driver license and health insurance) are about the thickness of a regular credit card when combined.

Credit cards with point categories I only occasionally use? Various membership cards (AAA, REI, etc.)? In Passbook. I don't have to carry them or remember to grab them if I'm going to a particular store. It's nice. Sure, it doesn't entirely remove my need to carry a wallet. It significantly reduces the number of times I need to deal with it, though.

I wonder why Comenity Bank is not listed yet.  I received an email from them on 12/9 and I have been using Apple Pay with my card from them this week.  They are not listed on Apple's website either.  Do some banks do a soft launch?
