Under pressure from Apple Music, Spotify tries to buy new subscribers' love with free Chromecast

In the face of intense competition from Apple Music and free alternatives like YouTube, streaming provider Spotify is working to entice consumers to sign up for its premium service by offering Google's Chromecast gratis to new subscribers.

A $29.97, three-month subscription will net any eligible Spotify member a free Chromecast until Feb. 28. The promotion is open to any Spotify Free user in the U.S. or UK who hasn't already used their Spotify Premium trial and was not previously a Spotify Premium subscriber.

The most recent Chromecast currently sells for $35, making this an intriguing deal for anyone on the fence about a Spotify Premium subscription.

Spotify and Google announced Chromecast support last September. Spotify had previously been a significant holdout from Google's in-home streaming efforts, focusing instead on its own Spotify Connect platform.

Based in Stockholm, Spotify can arguably be credited with kickstarting the adoption of subscription-based streaming music services around the world. The introduction of Apple Music has put pressure on the firm, however, and emboldened many major artists to demand that Spotify drop its popular free tier.

Being included as a default app on the world's most popular handset has helped Apple Music catch up to the competition, posting impressive growth. Apple's service currently boasts more than 11 million paid subscribers -- just 7 months after launch -- compared to fewer than 30 million paid members for the 9-year-old Spotify.

Give me a free AppleTV and I'm in! I wouldn't touch anything Google with a 500ft pole!

Apple should reply to this with a free 32GB AppleTV.

Too bad Apple doesn't ship junk and it's worth more than that chrome crap.

Hmmmm.... On second thought Apple could actually do this with a 2 year Apple Music subscription. This would be a more enticing deal that would lock-in users for 2 whole years.

An even better deal would be a free AppleTV with 1-year Apple Video streaming service in the future.

Apple doesn't need to entice people to come to Apple Music....I think they're just doing it and Spotify is feeling the pain because of it. Did Spotify not see Apple Music as a threat before? Maybe that was Pandora....

I love nearly all things Apple, but I ended my AM subscription to keep Spotify. Better browsing of new music, fewer UX problems, and overall a better integration with other apps I use (Such as Pacemaker. Try this app and you'll love it). Maybe AM can get to that point one day but until then I will keep giving my money to Spotify due to their superior development and integration.

That's a pretty good bonus. The new Chromecasts are nice. I do think they should also give the option for the Chromecast Audio.

Is this the same Spotify that wasn't worried about Apple music because Spotify had such a head start?

Apple is more innovative than spotify...they are coming up with Iphone 7 without a phone jack..now that is innovation....
Bad comparison. Spotify doesn't make hardware.
