Actually, that black iMac looks very nice, very professional. It reminds me of that black crinkle rubber/powder-coat on old cameras, and the chrome sets it off perfectly. That would look great on my desk.

Apple's doing something interesting with the plastics, though. I didn't really think that the iMacs were painted in the same way as th iBooks (at least not the base) but it appears that they are, only now the transparent plastic is moderately opaque. Interesting. Very deceptive, in person it looks like they used a milky white colored plastic, but it turns out that it's actually painted on the inside.

Could this be an applique (as is the iBook) of lessons learned in the development of flowerpower and blue dalmation?

WOW that iBook looks amazing! I wish Apple would offer different style colors (no, not the tacky colors from the past). I would love a Ti iPod, iMac or an iBook. I am so hating this white thing!

I am so, so glad that Apple has gone all-white on the consumer end.

Agree! If you're going to go through all the work to paint it, make it tangerine!

There's nothing horrible looking about it. That imac isn't finished properly, the inside ports and vents are still white and they need a brighter finish on the Apple logos, but the concept itself is sound. Add the outgoing black pro keyboard and mouse and it's perfect.

If the white iMac is cheerful and inviting, the black is more subtle/serious and business like.

Apple could certainly sell a few of them. Picture a black iMac (properly finished) on a rich burl-wood and leather desktop next to a couple of fine pens and a silver letter opener and a few sheets of nice writing stock (not that crap lined school paper you get a K-Mart.) All lit in the soft light of a rich den. Basically one of those "you'll never afford this, but here have a look" Robb Report style photos. An iMac (dark) would lok perfect there.

Whats funny to me is that 99% of all the people who say it looks horrible in black, would be falling all over themselves about how cool the black looks had Apple shipped it that way.

Another interesting note is the coloring process apple uses for the iBook, e, & iMacs. Could they be leaving their future options open for new colors/patterns? All white is better than colors and probably the black too, but the black certainly works in some areas that the white doesn't.

<img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> not sure about the black, but then its down to personal taste I guess.

Very cool pics of the stripped iMac though

Any one know of a site that has a step by step strip down of the FP iMac in pics?

    Preferably with english captions!

Black is where its at. Fvuck white-not much better than beige. If not black the iMac and eMac should at least be a darker color-even the silver on the G4 towers would be an improvement.

I also think Apple should change the name of the eMac-dumb name. It should be called the iMac G4. And the LCD iMac should be called the iMac G4 LCD.....................

I saw some picks of painted iBooks (sorry no link) done in blue, orange and other colors. They looked really sharp. Really made the glowing apple on the back ofthe LCD stand out.

I would love to do that to my ibook but i think it might void the warranty and I dont want to throw away the investment. maybe apple will bring back flavours into the iBook line. That graphite iBook from the link above looked really classy too... mmmmmmmm... mini-titanium!

Why is it always some Japanese kid who risks wrecking his expensive hardware in order to tear it apart and paint it?

Not only would they look hot, but they'd hide normal wear and tear a bit better than the white. Imagine the current shiny chrome Apple logo on a matte brushed titanium like surface (a la Xserve).

I TOTALLY dig the white look on lots of Apple's stuff! Best look going, IMO.

I STILL think some enterprising sort should come up with patterned/colored plastic iPod sleeves (like cel phone replacement faces) with an integrated belt clip.

Actually, I think they should ALL simply be called "iMac". The only distinction: CRT or LCD.

If people can't differentiate between the big egg-shaped CRT and the sunflower-inspired LCD model, they don't need to be buying a computer to begin with.

There's nothing "e" about the eMac anymore, you know? I have a feeling the G3-based 15" iMacs are on the way out, so when that happens, re-name the eMac "iMac".

People would have a choice: $1099 to $1999...and I would suspect they could eventually get the $1099 former eMac down below $1000.

Might help simplify the lineup: all consumer desktops now called iMacs (everyone's used to it).

Apple could, via print ads and perhaps even a commercial, show that the iMac line consists of two distinct style choices.

If they can't even tell that they're not the same model by the LCD suffix, then they don't deserve a computer.

God forbid we read the manual.
