Even More "Proof" -- Macs are cheaper than PCs

I saw a more recent article on cost of usage between Mac vs PC. Since so many people on AI seem to complain about how expensive (overpriced) Mac are currently, I thought I would post this information.

You can find it here :

<a href="http://news.macunlimited.com/news_123.html"; target="_blank">http://news.macunlimited.com/news_123.html</a>;

(It is a tad long....So I'll just give the link for it)

I do agree Macs have a slightly higher inital price, however, I think this article provides some interesting insight. I believe most everyone is familar with Macs being cheaper to maintain as far as support is concerned between Macs and PCs. The information goes many steps further than this one area.

Maybe no one will respond or care at all, but I thought I would post this link anyway.

Hm, an interesting point of wiev...

Agree that mac users are happier :-)

I haven't calcolated the usage costs, but.. i bought a laptop pc in oct. 99. And have used it a lot.. i have had to format it some 50 ties apprx, and if i calcolate formatting it, plus installing custom windows and all the programs (office, photoshop, freehand, lots of web design studd ecc) takes each time at least a day .. some 10 hours maybe, that would add a lot of cost. if i didn't do that myself, or would have had to use tech support for that i would have lost a loot of $$$ .. i have used only a lot of time. and nerves.

and become a tech support for many friends.

the initial prices are eifficult to compare.

    ok, now the euro = dollar.. 1 =1 ...

in US the config of the ibook i want is about 1600 $. here i pay 2400 E = 2400 $. not fair.

of course the powerbook would be <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> lovely and i cant actually compare it to the pcs.. but i'm too poor to buy a powerbook. maybe.. when .. i one day get a good job i'll get one.

i guess there aren't any macs that need to be formatted once a month to run .. but plenty of windows are that.. as my point of view (with 10 yrs with the damned windows..) the thing XP can be used to is to check the hacking ability: to test how long it takes to crack into a XP running system. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> XP really sucks.. can't wait to see the next one! soon the winzoz users will prefer 3.1 ... <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

    0,98 or 1,02 .. around there.

it was something like 0,84 ...

so now it sucks as the prices of macs are unfair!!

    1500 $ model is 2160 E. <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" /> <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

Just curious, but what is it doing when you decide it needs to be reformatted? I am well aware that Windows systems tend to get flakey after a while, sometimes leaving no choice but a reformat, but 50X?

Windows 95, 98, ME are flaky and sometimes you need to reinstall everything.

Windows 2000, and XP are actually pretty solid. I spend 8-10 hours a day beating the living daylights out of my registry (unregistering and reregistering thousands of dll's CoClasses, Interfaces, etc.) as part of my job, and I have yet to have either Win2k or XP go bad on me. Of course, as a developer, I also have a tendency to not install strange shareware programs on my machines and this undoubtedly helps qquite a bit.

So, ditch 95 or 98 or ME for a copy of Win2k that can be obtained from eBay. You won't regret it.

Now that I think about it, on of my roommates has a Win98 box that is always in some strange state of failure, but he has a tendency to isntall LOTS of strange shareware programs (as well as all the chat programs that you can find). If you install software like this, you are playing with fire because it is possible for these programs to incorrectly uninstall themselves. The net result will be odd crashes of other software that can only be fixed by reinstalling programs, or by starting from scratch and reinstalling everything. Performing triage by manually reregistering dll's is not someting that you want to do.

    Avoid cheap software!

Hate to bust your bubble, but I've beat on a few Win2k machines for a living, too. Even expensive, professional software can foul it up, leaving it kind of flakey. It's never been as bad that I had to do a reformat/reinstall, but sometimes it gets bad enough to seriously ponder the act. No Windows machine is truly safe (unless you plan to install no software at all, ever, and have it sit in a dark closet to be touched by no one ). You are at the mercy of the developer and whatever service patch they happen to be working on at the time.

The safest way to use windows.. is to install it custom, quite minimum, use it with no programs at all, and not connecting it anywhere.

I don't use to install the crap in it. So i mainly have office, photoshop, sometimes freehand and autocad, if i need them. lots of web editing stuff, adobe and macromedia, and a handful of programs for defining the colors, scrollbars etc. also, only one messenger with which i could use all the messengers (aol, icq, yahoo and even msn.. which i don't use). oh, then opera and sometimes mozilla.

at a certain point.. it starts to get very low.

the last time the problem was the firewall. i know exactly what i messed with it, but i didn't know where to edit the registries.. and that would not have been a safe choise annyway in windows. last time i decided to fromat was having NO firewall, i couldn't disintall what i had nor install anything else. normally when i decide it needs to be formatted, just before i install anything if i had programs i'd like to try. so if thye seem ok, maybe i'll install them later. if not, anyway was going to format.

so, in my case i lost my nerves or it crashed ehough in media once a month. in the beginning it was 98, then millennnium .. with 98 the pcmcia crashed always so had to have Me. ..tehn was thinking to install xp only because i had it before it got out.. but seeing its "security" features decided not to do it.

now it seems more stabile.. i installed redhat 7.3 .. but the photoshop like prog is going on my nerves, when i do something on a layer it changes without asking the layer

one of my windows using (killing) friends said about linux.. "it's very stabile. i installed it in january and i haven't formatted it yet.."
