Metal vs 'State of Open GL' on the Mac vs 'welcoming environment' of the PS4 or Windows Direct 12.

Blizzard have cancelled their new game for the Mac.

Citing GPU tech' and/or developer relations for gaming companies with Apple.

Blizzard have been great supports for WoW over the years.  Stalwarts for the platform.

Rumour has it they even have WoW running on Metal...in beta.

What's going on?

Is Metal complete?  DOES it even compete with Direct 11 on windows?  Can it go toe to toe with Direct 12?

We're paying a premium for hardware.

Discuss.

Lemon Bon Bon.

PS.  Mac.  You'll pry it from my cold, dead fingers.  Currently playing 'WoW' on iMac. ;)

The Overwatch game doesn't have very high requirements. It's a pretty basic looking multiplayer shooter:

    Here's it on a 620M laptop:

Maybe it was to do with Vulkan/Metal support but if it was that, I'd expect they'd say that directly and it doesn't make sense given the requirements:

"It was a result of not having all the technological support we needed to make the game viable on Mac systems.” says Kaplan, referring to Apple’s policies with OSX. “We have a real love and dedication for Mac players, they’ve been extremely loyal to us and we love giving them Blizzard games.

“But when dealing with the PC, the Xbox One and the PS4 - all of which are extremely welcoming to the technological needs to run a next-generation shooter - in a lot of ways we felt left behind, that we weren’t given the support we needed to make a great product on the Mac."

It could have been other parts of the game like cross-platform networking, DRM, cross-platform mods or the App Store distribution. Usually companies are pretty vague about what their problem is when they just don't get their own way.
