Spotify hires manager Troy Carter to challenge Apple & others on exclusive content

Apple's chief competitor in the streaming music space, Spotify, is reportedly hiring Troy Carter, a high-profile manager best known for artists like Lady Gaga, Meghan Trainor, and John Legend.

Carter will help Spotify secure exclusive artist content, as well as oversee the creation of original material, HITS Daily Double said on Monday. While the new job was initially just a rumor, Carter later told Re/code that the story was "a bit of a premature leak." It's uncertain whether that meant that talks are still ongoing or if the job is secure. Either way, Spotify has officially refused to comment.

Exclusives have been one of Apple's main weapons in promoting Apple Music. In this area the company has the advantages of Beats co-founders Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre, who both have extensive music industry connections. Though it still lags behind in subscriber numbers, Tidal enjoys the clout of co-owners like Jay Z, Rihanna, and Kanye West.

Spotify has largely lacked any meaningful music exclusives or well-known corporate talent, but is nevertheless the world's most popular on-demand streaming service, with over 30 million paid subscribers and many more using its free ad-based tier. In comparison Apple has somewhere over 13 million subscribers in total, with no free listening after a three-month trial period ends.

An Apple Music revamp is expected at next week's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco. This may include a better interface, more Beats radio content, and a move away from the service's failed Connect social network.

Just because he baby sits a bunch of artist does not mean he know how to work in the music delivery world. If they think their problem is getting exclusive content they have bigger problems. This is another example of hey Apple did this lets do the same and we will be successful as well.

You watch what the other guy is doing and if it’s successful you try to match it. Emphasis on try. What’s wrong with that? Apple does the same thing. Larger iPhone screens come to mind.

Since Spotify is already way more successful then Apple Music, it doesn't hurt to land some exclusive deals. Great hire for Spotify.

Hahahaaa - good luck with that, Spotify. Once Apple releases it's video streaming service, including original content, it will be a done deal for Apple over Spotify. It will eventually be a no brainier for consumers when they realize that their entire entertainment can exist on one connected ecosystem.

It should be illegal for Spotify to get exclusive content ahead of Apple.  I hope they get taken to task on their anti competitive practices.

And yet not everyone will subscribe even if they do have Apple products let alone the people that don't. Why do you think that a video streaming service will all of a sudden be better than everyone else's?

They do lack one thing required to get exclusive content... Actual MONEY.
Apple's financial clout and its ecosystem means Spotify will eventually be gone...

It's losing money hands over fist, AKA not successful... Except maybe in the dot com era.... Yes, I worked in Silicon valley during that era...

The original Iphone screen was already larger, so maybe they did it first...
