Apple says 'Apps for Earth' campaign raised over $8M for World Wildlife Fund
Apple and the World Wildlife Fund together raised more than $8 million in proceeds during April's "Apps for Earth" campaign on the App Store, the two groups have announced.
An announcement was made earlier this week at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, the company said on Friday. The Apps for Earth promotion launched on April 14, and directed money from 27 apps to fund the WWF and its conservation programs.
In all, 24 developers participated, including those responsible for some extremely popular apps like Hearthstone and Line.
The promotion was timed to end April 24, just a couple of days after Earth Day. Apple launched a special section on the App Store to grab public attention.
Apps for Earth is actually Apple's second collaboration with the WWF. In 2015 the two partnered on a project to conserve up to a million acres of "responsibly managed" forest in China, hoping to come closer to a net-zero impact on the Earth's "virgin" fiber. Apple uses vast amounts of paper and cardboard in boxing its products.
