Apple has announced an August 16th grand opening date for its new retail store located within the World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan.

First confirmed over two years ago, the new WTC Apple Store is located within the dramatic, $4 billion Oculus structure designed by Santiago Calatrava.

The building serves as retail mall and an extravagant connection between the underground station for PATH trains arriving from New Jersey and the local New York City subways.

The breathtaking expense of the structure, built near the site of the original WTC twin towers destroyed in a terrorist attack in 2001, has festered as a subject of controversy. Apple--along with other retailers--also reportedly took issue with some of the design elements of the building, including the rib-like columns that extend into the retail space of tenants within the mall, obscuring windows and signage.

However, Apple has a deep affection for locating its retail stores in prime locations, often within dramatic, historic or otherwise spectacular or noteworthy buildings.

In addition to being a landmark located at a famous site, the Calatrava Oculus structure is also a high foot traffic node for Manhattan's commuters, another key feature that captures Apple's attention in looking for potential retail sites.

The new store will join seven other Apple Store locations in the heart of New York City, including the SoHo store just 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north of the new WTC site; a West 14th store in the Meatpacking District; the Grand Central Terminal location; the landmark Fifth Avenue Cube; Upper West Side and Upper East Side stores straddling Central Park; and a recently opened Brooklyn location just 3 miles (4.8 km) to the west across the Williamsburg Bridge.

Within about a 25 mile radius of New York City, Apple also has stores on Staten Island and in Queens, two stores on Long Island, one in Yonkers and six other retail stores across the Hudson River in New Jersey, easily making the city the most densely packed collection of Apple Stores outside of San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Does any place on the planet sell more Apple stuff than what's sold within the tiny area of Manhattan? Apple stores are everywhere there, and more are popping up all of the time.

Because you have to be a millionaire to live there. The cost of Apple products is nothing in comparison.

Apple Stores are more service and support centers than anything else, so it makes sense that the locations that sell more Apple Products also have the most stores to serve those customers. Also, it's friggin' Manhattan! The whole world travels through and shops there.

No disrespect in my opinion that design isn't very attractive

"That design" isn't the Apple Store; it's the mall the store is in.

It’s complete garbage. What’s wrong with a physical design that is utilitarian? What’s wrong with the stylings of art deco? Old Manhattan was beautiful.

No, doesn't apply.  The Apple Stores with the highest traffic are filled with people from Brazil, Germany, Australia, etc, with subway maps in hand.  The ample presence of foreign tourists in NYC Apple Stores is one of the first things one notices.  I would wager that the more experienced Apple shoppers in Manhattan buy at B & H, which, unlike the Apple Stores, has regular deals chopping hundreds off and throwing extras in.  And there's the added plus of non-Apple peripherals being at good prices instead of the ridiculous prices they are at Apple Stores.

I walked through the WTC Transit Hub this morning. I realize a lot of people knock the design of the WTC Transit Hub but you have to see it to appreciate it. Pictures don't do it justice. On another note, the Apple Store sits a prime location just up the steps from the PATH train. This is an excellent location as there is no store in close proximity to Hudson County. This location will perform very well.

Finally got chance to stop by. The newer stores are so sterile, soulless places. Reminiscent of 70s mall shops. And the Oculus looks messy already. So not worth $4 billion
