The Apple Edge

Apple is re-using a physical design that's entering its third iteration. And that gives Apple a cost advantage that's quite significant by itself. That's what has allowed Apple to go in for higher Flash memory, without impacting its profit margins. Already other high end phones were finding it a tough comparison against the iPhone, now that comparison has become even more ridiculous.

The A-series processors have reached a point where Apple is so far out of the league of the competition. To create a phone that is 6 grams lighter, but that has 2 hours additional battery life, is quite simply a stunning accomplishment.

The Apple ecosystem is starting to look incredible. In terms of hardware, it is the only ecosystem on the planet that supports Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Apple ecosystems, with zero compromise. That makes it a no brainer for anyone to pick up an iPhone as opposed to anything else. But once you pick up the iPhone, you are obviously better off playing in Apple's garden. And some aspects of the ecosystem, like Apple Pay, Passport, etc, simply don't have a worthwhile alternative anywhere else!

If a player like Nintendo is collaborating with Apple, then it raises the bar big time for pretty much every one else who wants to be in the gaming space. Nintendo share price shot up on this news - but I think the impact on Apple is just as significant. The real benefits of this collaboration will happen when Apple TV morphs into a gaming console beyond anything else out there.

The collaboration with IBM in the enterprise space is just starting to bear fruit. The iPad Pro could easily be a full fledged work machine, obviating the need for laptops, notebooks, etc. And we will soon see enterprises migrating to this model in droves. Over the last 3 years, we have had a massive migration of enterprise from legacy solutions into cloud hosted, web based solutions. This makes it much easier to transition entirely to iPad, and the momentum for this is only increasing.
