Apple Newbie needs advice

Hi
I have a quick question:
 I am really confused about what to do In regards to anti virus software to protect my iMac
do I even need it there seems to be lots of software for mac to protect against this is it even necessary
there seems to be conflicting opinions yes you need it... no you don't...
hope somebody can advise me what to do I haven't a clue

    It’s not really necessary. Just never download or run anything you don’t remember obtaining or from a source you don’t trust. OS X handles the rest.

    In Windows running on a Mac, I still like malwarebytes.

    Mac OS X really doesn't need an added antivirus program. Just don't live hazardously (don't change the setting to allow apps downloaded from anywhere to run, don't add or turn on Java, avoid Flash if possible, and keep the OS updated).

    As long as you aren't downloading and opening a ton of garbage dmg files that you got from pop up sites you should be fine.  If you are going to be doing a ton of high risk surfing, downloading, and third party installations; you may want to consider getting AVG and Spybot for mac.
