Sure hope Apple is planning to release a desktop version of their OLED strip keyboard, would be nice. Sure seems like something they would do at some point.

Agreed! Seems like a product we'll see (or should!) within the next year at most.

The technical challenges are significant, and the cost won't be cheap. The Touch Bar in the MBP is driven by an Apple "T1" chip running an offshoot of watchOS. So basically it will be a little iOS device built into the keyboard.

It has also been reported that the T1 chip works together with the CPU, but it's not clear exactly how. This makes me think that it won't work with older Macs. And I don't have any sense of whether or not it would work over bluetooth. It might need to be wired? [Really, I have no idea.]

My guess is that it will come out when the new iMacs come out. Next year sometime, maybe WWDC?
