Applescript question

Is there a way to get applescript to edit only part of a document without opening it. Example: say I have a list. Is there a way to append something to the end of the list without opening the document itself? What about searching the document for a string, then adding to or replacing that string? Any ideas or anyone know where I can find info like this?

    I don't think so because AppleScript has no knowledge of a file's format. Is there a reason why you don't what to start the application??
