Apple debuts App Accelerator in Bangalore as Phil Schiller visits India

Apple on Friday inaugurated its promised App Accelerator center in Bangalore, India, which will support developers through means like talks by experts and one-on-one app reviews.

Some developers such as Practo and Reliance Games have already made use of the facility in the past few weeks, according to a press statement by Apple's senior VP of Worldwide Marketing, Phil Schiller. Schiller is on his first trip to India for the opening, Mashable noted, but it's not yet clear if he will make other stops, as CEO Tim Cook did when he visited the country in May 2016.

The Accelerator will host labs and presentations "throughout the year," Apple says, and teach elements like interface design, working with frameworks, and coding in Swift. Help will be available for iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS.

For people able to make it to Bangalore events at the Accelerator are free, but attendees must but registered Apple developers, and sign into the center's scheduling page.

India is fast becoming an important market for Apple, owing not just to its sheer size but stalled growth in China. The company is on the verge of launching local iPhone manufacturing, which may not only help it break through affordability barriers but set the stage for country's first official Apple stores. At the moment the company's products are available only through resellers, since there isn't even a regional online store.

    Based on these numbers...

    ...and these numbers...

...it'll be quite some time before there is a sizable population in India for Apple's various products.

Ah, there you go again, @SpamSandwich. You really do sound like you have an ax to grind when it comes to India. At this point, I can only figure that you lost your job or livelihood to better-qualified Indian IT person at some point in your life, and it still rankles.

I was just there a couple of weeks ago, after a trip 15 months prior. In the prior trip, all I saw were Samsungs. In this trip, iPhones were everywhere, especially among the higher end consumer. I was quite taken aback at the stunning inroads Apple seems to have made in the country in less than a year and a half.

Apple is going to be HUGE in India. I think I'll place my bets on Apples judgment about India than your seemingly weird grudge. Let's wait and see. Give it a couple of years.

I recall here on AI the exact same sort of comments about China back in the day.  They were 'all too poor to pay the Apple tax'  remember?   Come on, be optimistic :)

Ha! I've no axe to grind with India. You're misreading or misinterpreting my comment.

As soon as Indians solve their lack of toilets problem so that people stop relieving themselves on the side of the road in plain view, they will surely go ahead and spend their annual salary on the iPhone.

626 million people in India practice open defecation. Apple should start making and selling the iJohn in India. It will be a big hit.
