Are Apple OEM DVD-RAM drives all loud?

I have a DVD-RAM drive pulled from my dual 500 MHz tower, a Matshita LF-D211A. It's quite loud, making the computer vibrate slightly when spinning. It sounds a bit like a car engine. The noise is quite consistent, though, so it's not scratching the CD or anything. Is this normal? Is it a problem with the drive? Or are they all like that?
