An actual fact?

I'm not here too often, but I thought I'd let you guys have this info with an explanation and my guess, then let you speculate. Here in Canada all Macs are the same price. Period. Very little variation, close to none in fact except in the higher-end G4 category where there's a bit of a margin. I was looking on <a href="http://www.macwarehouse.ca"; target="_blank">www.macwarehouse.ca</a> this past winter shortly before the G4 iMac was announced, and was surprised to see a discount on one of the better G3 iMacs. I in fact was excited enough to order one, never thinking that Apple would put a big G4 in the new iMac. I had just enough time to cancel my order when I found out that this particular model of G3 iMac was discontinued as of the G4 iMac announcement, it wasn't part of the reduced line of G3s. Apple had used macwarehouse.ca to quietly dispose of a specific discontinued model.

So imagine my surprise when I look in a tiny, obscure section of the macwarehouse.ca and I see this:

RTCPU1752APPLE POWERMAC G4 933 256/60/SUPERDRIVE *RED TAG ($)3379 Computers

RTCPU1796 APPLE iMAC G4 800MHZ 256/60GB/SUPERDRIVE *RED TAG ($) 2849 Computers

<a href="http://www.macwarehouse.ca/clearance.asp"; target="_blank">http://www.macwarehouse.ca/clearance.asp</a>;

For you Americans, the Canadian dollar is worth about 65 of your cents.

That's a significant discount over the prices for these systems elsewhere on the same site, which are:

APPLE POWERMAC G4 933MHZ/256MB/60GB/SUPERDRIVE [Apple] CPU1752 M8666LL/A $3,649.00

APPLE iMAC G4 800MHZ 256/60GB/SUPERDRIVE 15TFT LCD [Apple] CPU1796

M8535LL/B $3,049.00

<a href="http://www.macwarehouse.ca/Prod_linelist.asp"; target="_blank">http://www.macwarehouse.ca/Prod_linelist.asp</a>;

These are the only two models noted, although there's a more modest (but still unusual) discount on low-end G4 iMacs right now too.

So here's my suggestion. These two models, and possibly the low-end iMac as well, are getting re-done, re-worked or discontinued in such a way that Apple is needing to dump a bunch of them ASAP away from the excited and attentive US Apple crowd.

My first guess would be discontinuing 700 Mhz iMac entirely (to differentiate further from eMac) and making 800 Mhz iMac the low-end (hence getting rid of 800 Mhz iMacs that already have the Superdrive). For the G4's I've got no clue, but it is interesting that the only 933 Mhz model they're selling off is the one with the Superdrive. Maybe the 800 Mhz Powermac is getting dumped and 933 will be the low-end (again, without a Superdrive option).

Okay, you can go ahead and argue now.

    These reductions are what many sites were using last week to preduct new models. However, more recent rumors are saying exactly the opposite, that instead they are marking them down because the have months worth of inventory in the channel..Apple prides itself on maintaining inventory of days, not weeks or months. Historically, Apple tries to clear the channel just prior to new models (or in the days on Spindler, in order to pad sales figures at the end of a period) Who knows, Apple could be discounting bacause of:

    1)Extreme excess in the channel

    2)Ready to intro new models and needs to clear of existing models

    3)Generate sales in the face of a slumping economy

    4)Decided they were just making to much damn money on each sale

    It could mean anything. I hope it is for new models. I hope to get a new job soon and would like to then purchase a new PowerMac or PBook, but don't want yesterdays tech. I also have a friend who has only ever owned Dell and IBM machines who is looking to buy a PowerBook but only if a they get updated..otherwise it's a Toshiba.
