I dont know much about OSX yet, in fact i am still waiting to use it for the first time, but i have worked with linux and freeBSD. With these sytems you do not need to defragment the drive as it does this on shutdown, boot, and while the system is running, i can only assume that since OSX has a modified version of FreeBSD built in that this is the reason.
