The good news is my refurb iPod has arrived at my brother's doorstep and will arrive up here in Canada on Friday.



The bad news is that Airborne Express didn't have anyone sign for the package. Just left it at the front door.

Is this normal practice? Sure it was free 2 day delivery, but I keep thinking how easy someone could have just walked off with it.

This would have caused a messy argument of whether or not the package was ever delivered or not.

How difficult is it for them to ring the doorbell and get a signature?

I agree. Airborne left a 18.1" LCD outside my door from IBM and didn't have me sign for it. That could have been a real mess. I was here too but I must have been in the shower or something. Thank goodness I was looking out for it cause I knew it would be there.

its called "driver release" and its O.K. and it depends on your neighborhood. if you dont get it and the dont have a sig. then they are S.O.L. not you UPS wont do any thing over $1000 that way.

This is a huge pet peeve of mine, and I always call and chew out everyone I can find. I've had legal documents and confidential docs left outside my door at home and at work. Unacceptable, totally friggin unacceptable. What's worse, twice the courier simply signed my name to the package. I wonder what would happen if you claimed that you didn't sign, but they had your name signed by someone. Bastards. If this ever happens again with a package, I'm goign to quietly collect it and make a giant stink about how it was never recieved. There's a friggin institution called a Post Office. If no one is present to recieve a package all you need to do is place a slip in the door and advise a pickup (with ID) at a post office or one of your depots. Bastards...

I'm just glad my building has a live-in superintendant who can sign for my packages when I'm not home. He then leaves them inside my appartment so that nobody can steal them (he's got my key).



BTW: I've never had a problem with carriers not getting a signature. I've had a problem with them not dialing up the super after they've found I'm not home. E.g. I had to drive halfway accross DC to pick up OS X 10.0 at the FedEx location because they didn't leave the package with my super. In that case, I really wish they'd left the package out in the cold without a signature. (I would have felt differently if it was a $3000 PowerBook, though.)

Wow. That is actually very illegal and the carrier could possible lose his or her job for that. I agree that the post office is the best (and safest in my opinion) of all the major carriers.

Both times this happened with a small city area courier that our lawyers used (to quickly shuttle stuff around the city for more important people I guess). The first time I called the courier and they blew me off, so I called our lawyers and told them, they wanted to blow me off too, but I called back and insisted on speaking to the office manager, we're not that small of a client, probably not that big, but not so small either. For the next while they used a different courier, but it seems they've gone back to the old courier and sure enough it happened again. Idiots.

Wow- that's weird. I have the exact opposite problem. Fed-ex and UPS refuse to leave things at my door, since the door is "visible from the street". Well, it is if you walk up to it. So I send everything to work. Pain in the butt if it's a big package, and in the interest of "security" they open it up in the mail room. So I have to watch what I order...

I've had UPS drivers leave packages in odd places, like behind my house's reserve water resevoir or at the very back of my house next to my dogs' door (meaning the driver had to open the gate to the dog pen ... a dangerous thing to do...)

Get a box at mail boxes etc. Plus, you never have to give out your real address to anyone, and if you move, close enough, you won't have to change the address (box address that is).

When UPS comes around here they just drop the box off and ring the door bell, and it is very visible from the street since I live on a stop sign corner.

FedEx has been good so far, did the whole signing thing.

Everything, supplies and services at MBE is a rip off, especially sending packages through them, but I guess I'm spoiled by FedEx InterNetShip and having a gated twisty driveway.

Not that I think much will come of it, but who can I write to at Apple to voice my displeasure.



My confidence in ordering stuff from the Apple Store online is shot unless they can provide secured delivery.

Airborne blows. My company just switched to them from FedEx for cost reasons (they're cheaper), and there's been nothing but complaints. On the first day of the switchover, Airborne lost one our packages, without a trace, or even a record that it was picked up from here.



It does depend where you are, though. Service in the New England area, which apparantly has one of the larger clientelles, isn't too bad; sevice in the mid-west is attrocious. One of our vendors called their customer service line to trace a package. Their rep was not only unhelpful, but actually hung up in the middle of the call.



As for leaving packages unsigned, I think that's their policy with residential shipments, though I suppose it could depend on the shipping method chosen (ground vs. next day vs. 2-day, etc.).

Its bad when they leave it outside your door, but its worse when they drop your brand new iMac and leave it outside the door, saying it was dropped lightly, sorry.
