Hi I have a friend who has a PC laptop running XP, and he has a bunch of MP3 files that I want to put on my computer, new iBook. Does anyone know how I could do this using a USB cord? He doens't have a firewire connection.

Thanks.

Best way is to get you guys on the same network and transfer files via TCP/IP - SAMBA.

Try Move2Mac. It includes a special USB cord for transferring files, and it simpifies the process immensly.

    it also costs like $60... <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />

networking the computers saves $$ and it is not that difficult... so why not?

OT: is it possible to get computers talking to each-other over a phone wire through their modems?

you can also burn the mp3 files into a CDR or CDRW. One CD can hold about 150 mp3s.

If the computer doesnt have burning function, u can try borrowing a CD burner from your friends.

Is there anyway to use a standard USB cable? I'm looking for the most low cost least hassle way to transfer MP3's. My buddy doesn't have a CD burner. So that is the problem.

a $5 ethernet cable will work.... you just need to know how to set it up...

USB will not work unless you BUY move to mac which is like $60 <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />

USB wasn't designed for networking, but for low-bandwidth peripherals like keyboards.

Seriously, just grab a cheap Ethernet cable, and go to town. He's going to have to set up the networking on his end, but your iBook *should* be able to autoconnect to it almost effortlessly. (Set your Location to use DHCP, then follow the directions in MacOS X Help to log onto his SMB sharing of his drive.)

if you have a large website you can upload them to there or use a P2P client like direct connect to get them without networking directly. but the best way would be to just buy a cheap network hub and link the 2 together, not a problem seeing as his is a laptop.

For just two computers, you don't need a hub. Just a cable. I believe that with the new iBook, you don't even need a crossover, just a standard cable. (It auto-senses the type of cable being used and adapts appropriately.)
