Entire Mac Product Line Update???

Posted:
in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
Well....As The Apple Turns (www.appleturns.com) just today posted a scene saying they've heard from one of their "sources" that the entire Mac product line is set to receive an update. While they remain skeptical, everyone on this board has been saying that they've had an excellent track record when it comes to predicting things. Could this be possible, and if so, what will we see in each product?

Not like I can afford a new Mac at this point, but I'd love to see Apple blow everyone away with style and decimate the competition with performance...

I look at it this way: if significantly faster Power Macs and iMacs are on the way, then Apple's portable lineup is going to look very underpowered if they are not updated. The only way I can see Apple neglecting its portables at MWSF is if they introduce new models at Tokyo (or possibly a special event in February).

I'd be very surprised if Apple updated everything. The Tibook might need an update (combo drive?) more than the iBook although it would be nice to have a 700 Mhz G3 in the iBook. I've always wondered why Apple didn't use the 700 Mhz G3.

They've been right even when they've been deeply skeptical of their information, so who knows?

It dovetails with murmurings elsewhere that Apple has finally secured combo drives (not SuperDrives) for the TiBook. As for the iBook, I can't believe the revision would be something as significant as a bigger screen. I can believe something like the 500Mhz variant going bye-bye, and the 600 MHz dropping down to the original $1299 price point (or lower). That "refreshes" the iBook line without requiring a dime in engineering costs.

I'm still not expecting a significant refresh of the portable lines until later this spring (Tokyo, or an Apple Event in March).

Appleturns has been very solid in their own cryptic, small way -- I think they're batting .900 for this year at least. So if this is true... I think this does point to G5's.

Everyone says the iMac needs to get to G4 to handle X and attract non-Apple users. But you can't burn the Powerbook users (especially after popping FC3 and hopefully some Adobe apps AE, etc.), and even if you could leave the iBook behind, it'll need a bump by Tokyo.

And I've seen little mention of this... The PowerMac case is also out of date if the iMac is -- Quicksilver doesn't solve the problem even if the color scheme is consistent. And, especially if it is G5, this machine will need to look DIFFERENT. Wouldn't want to confuse it with your "ordinary" G4 PowerMac.

Yes, I'm starting to believe that the iMac and PowerMac will receive inside and outside a major rev. The 'books will follow not because it's necessary, but because Apple is going to be able to wow us... Might as well wow us all at once. Besides, they need to get the entire G3/G4/G5 -- OS X/Classic -- I/O and internal drive issue on track for the fantastic year that 2002 is going to be.

I can see a combo drive in the Titanium, and maybe a boost to 700 or 750 MHz in the iBook. This should hold it over until IBM gets the Sahara out the door at 1 GHz.

Then maybe the next gen TiBook will surface at MWT.

Somehow though, I still think MWT will be focused on portables, and maybe even bring forth a new digital device of some kind.

At this point, I'm willing to take AtAT as gospel. Over the last few years, they have been dead-on almost every time. They are almost never the first with a rumor - they tend to wait until their *very knowledgable* source gives them a definite answer, then obfuscate the content with self-deprecating humor and pretending they don't believe themselves. On the other hand, if some rumor is B.S., they will come out and say so pretty bluntly.

They were pretty sly about the G5s in this one. Initially, they made it sound like "no way", but then they sucker-punched us at the end. This is their way of saying G5s are a sure thing.

So, I think we can bank on an update/remake of the entire computer line. To me, it appears they are confirming an iBook with a 13.3" screen (+ speed bump), a slot-loading combo drive for the TiBook (+ speed bump), a new LCD iMac, and G5 processors for the tower lineup.

I wouldn't bet my house on it, but it looks pretty solid from my viewpoint.

Very clever, TJM, I hadn't even worked in your reading. Like you said, when they don't know, they back off -- I thought that was going on with the G5, but was using my own impressions and the web of rumors to infer that if Apple did rev everything, then there'd have to be G5s. Well, as you note, spinning the last line is typical AtAt... G5 PowerMacs, LLCD iMac, revs all the way around, and who knows what else! I'm convinced.

You've got to be careful with AtAT about whether they are reporting other sites' rumors, or presenting their own. They do report most rumors that come out from MOSR, AI, the Register, etc.

This one sounds to me like one of their own. And that's a Good Sign?.

"We're working hard to make this January's Macworld the most exciting ever," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO

"We're thrilled to move the keynote up to Monday, and begin the excitement a day sooner."

"Steve's keynote is a great way to start what will be a very exciting and informative week for all Macworld attendees," said Charlie Greco, president and CEO of IDG World Expo

This looks to be interesting. plus, this is the first time in the 18 year history of macworld that the keynote will be Before the expo opens. Interesting. In other words, we want to tell you what you're seeing before you see it.

I love ATAT, and I hope they are right, but boy, I'll believe it when I see the keynote via streaming.. I really don't want to be disappointed again, after reading too much on the net about MWNY.

That's not hard, because if Jack gets a rumor from somewhere else he says so, and links to the source.

I'm not convinced that he's confirming bigger screens for the iBook. After all, he got no response on that inquiry. If the iBook gets a refresh it'll probably be something that requires no engineering (my idea) or very little (a new 700MHz model, bigger HDs, etc.), with more significant changes like new screen sizes appearing when the line is overhauled later this spring.

Personally, for the iBook I'd prefer battery life improvements and weight reduction to performance and screen size (especially since a 13.3" screen would probably still display 1024x768). If Apple could roll out an honest-to-goodness 8-hour laptop, that would be amazing.

Me too.. I keep coming around here every few hours, just to see what's up.. I've gotta stop it, cold turkey.. it'll just spoil my MW expo keynote..

Apparently, the combo (cdrw + dvd) drive is about to appear come December 18 on powerbooks, at the same price as the current models + cdrw.

    Just quietly slipping that in...

I agree. I got a chance to hold a new iBook at my local Wiz and I was surprised by the battery weight. If they can reduce the iBook's weight even more, that is where the reduction would have to come from.

    Where'd that come from?

Doesn't anyone find it strang that Jack@AtAT is planning on buying a DP800 this weekend. (This is noted in his survey this episode)

If they truely believed that the PM line was to be updated, wouldn't they wait the three weeks? <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

Or are they just getting in on the Crystal Clear promotion?

Buy the hardware when it's cheap. Just because G5's are coming out doesn't mean they will be cheap. Plus, the G5 prb won't be shipping until Feb or so.

Well g5's can't be much more than the present g4's... if at all. I say same price range:$1600-$3500.

The portables could use a speedbump. For example 700-750MHz with 20GB drives for the iBooks and 733,866MHz and combo drives for the PowerBooks.

They know the PowerMac is being updated. They just don't feel like waiting til feb.
