Recent iBook purchasers screwed?

This one must hurt.

For an equivalent 12 inch model, $500 more gets you:

G4 867 vs G3 800

PC card

true dual monitor support,

thinner,

lighter,

FW2

probably a lot more...

There is no FireWire 2 on the 12" model.

I think FW2 is only on the 17" model (still sounds weird talking about a 17" model!)

REGARDLESS OF WHAT STEVE SAYS, ALWAYS ALWAYS, Always check the rumor site beore buying anything. We didn't say it would be boring, we said the desktop hardware would most likely suck (and it did) but we did have a very good handle on the laptop roll-outs. Trust us, we know of what we speak.

I think the 12 inch model also lacks the awesome backlit keyboard, no?

That sucks that the 12" doesn't have it. Oh well.

It seems now that the iBook will never go G4 but will eventually ramp up to a gigahertz G3.

Not sure if this is a good thing or not but makes marketing the two lines much simpler.

    I just bought a new iBook 14.1 for $1800(but I got a Dev discount)

Does it bother me that if i waited 2 months I wouldve got a G4?...Yes...

Can I live with it - Definitely

I have no problems with my iBook, and it definitely suits my needs....

Let me get this straight: 24 hours ago, a fibre-optic backlit keyboard was the stuff of dreams, now it "sucks" that a laptop which packs more into a £1100 package than any so-called competitor doesn't have the same capability as its (much) bigger brother which has a (much) steeper price.

God, you must be a difficult person to please.

The 12" Powerbook is amazing. I didn't mean that the 12" PB sucked, all I meant was that it would be even better with the same keyboard as the 17".

And no, I'm not difficult to please.

Everyone on this site knows that the high tech world is constantly changing with updates and new computers coming fast and furious. You buy what you need at the moment. If something a little better comes along, well that's the way life is. It is neither the end of the world nor does it "suck". Satchmo you need to get a grip on reality and accept life for what it is. OK?, OK.

Chill buddy...I never used the word "suck" or mentioned that the world was coming to an end. Just stating the "reality" of life and wasn't meant to "stick it" to iBook owners.

I bought an 800 iBook last November. I'm not upset. There comes a time when you have spent enough and you have to commit to being satisfied with what you have for a good couple of years or more (unless you're well off--I'm looking at law school, though, so no high life for me until about 2007, and even then... ). I like my iBook and do not feel ripped off.

I also bought Airport cards and a hub in November. THAT hurts a little more, but I will survive.

The PowerBook is infringing on the iBook now, isn't it?

    That couldn't possibly mean anything.

BTW, the 14" iBook just took a $200 price cut to make room. That'll do... for now...

Sushiism: Where did you get that impression? I read a different thread and most people were just saying what could be improved, not whining. You again flew off the handle and got angry at someone for saying how it could be improved. Please stop doing that, it's annoying.

I have an 800 MHz iBook that I bought in mid-December. I feel a bit bad about not being able to get the 12" PowerBook, especially with the educational price of it being about $1500-$1600 at my school. Still, I wouldn't really have been able to afford it. I'm happy with the iBook.

I'll probably replace my iBook with a 12" PowerBook, maybe when it's in its third or fourth revision. Right now there's no reason for me to sell the iBook and get the PowerBook? I'd get an extra 10 GB of storage, I'd have to buy some DDR, and I'd get the G4, but the graphics card is somewhat similar and the RAM limit is the same.

The 12 includes bluetooth does it not?

Too bad they put a slot loader on the new PB's, but I hear that combo burns CDR at 24X, damn, in a portable, yummy.

Meanwhile, the TiBook still uses an 8x combo drive.

The 17" PowerBook has a 2x superdrive also. Yeah, a 2x slot loader. Pretty sweet.

I'd trade my iBook's tray-loading 16x (actually just 4x due to a problem) for that 24x slot loader any day. Isn't it on the left too? That makes it even better because it's not in the way of my mouse.

I bought my iBook about eight months ago for the equivalent price.

    My configurations are

    8mb of video ram

    600mhz G3

    128mb ram

    20gb hard disk

    I'm screwed!! <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />
