In today's Wall Street Journal there was a news item describing how Dell is going to be selling PC based cash registers. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

That can be a very good business in as much as Dell will sell them at prices well below NCR and the other companies that make similar product... you can bet on that!

actually, selling cash register's seems to me like Micheal Dell's wet dream.

    boring.

IIRC, Steve Jobs got that guy from Pepsi to come to Apple with the following line.

They'd talked for some time, and the guy wasn't at all interested, and quite frankly i can see why. Pepsi had a much better outlook, better resources, position in their market, you name it.

But before Steve left, he looked at him and asked:

"Do you want to sell sugar water for the rest of your life or try and change the world?"

that's the outlook i love to see in a company's leader.

It's funny. I was JUST thinking about exactly this idea today. Maybe Apple could do it.

Right now they have a lot on their plate. Still, if I were running Apple, I'd be thinking about picking up market share in lots of different places...little bits at a time.

It's not the hardware.... it's the software. The first thing you gotta have is great Point Of Sale (POS) Software to run on the hardware.

"All" that Apple needs to do is find the right OEM who will bundle their software with the necessary touchscreen mod, and then SELL it into the marketplace.

Presto, a place for all those 15" CRT iMacs still sitting around.....
