Which OS is best?
I have a 200MHz 604e with 96MB RAM, what OS am i best running for speed if i just want to:
talk on IM
surf internet
check email
perhaps download music
am i better off running 9.1 or linux...or some OS i dont know about, i just want it to run as fast as possible becuase after using a G4 733MHz for most the past 6months it is SOO SLOW

where would i get these, i don't imagine apple sells anymore and i wouldn't know where you would download them...i have 8.6 on a disc that came with a B&W G3, but i dont think that runs on this computer (the installer that is)

You could always try it and see if it works.
I'm also going to chime in for OS 8.6. As for buying it, eBay is probably the place to get the best price on a legitimate copy.

...and if i don't want to get it legitimatly?
perhaps i'll do it the right way and buy it, kinda seems like a waste since i have 7.5.3, 8.6(but it won't install cuz its a g3 disc), 9.2, and 10 legally. Is there any way to get the OS off the 8.6 CD, cuz i own that haha.
What is Mac OS ROM?
All versions of system 7 require full 68k emulation, as far as I know. They're not demanding, and they will run on PPCs, so it kind of balances it out. However, some slow PPCs, like the PowerBook 5300, are unusable in System 7 and are much better in OS 8.1 or 8.6. Because the 5300 had a slow 4050 RPM hard drive, it's best to run 8.6 if you have the RAM because it cuts down on emulation. Of course, your computer will be much faster than that. I would definitely recommend 8.6.
Oh, and my brother's 8.5 CD that came with a blue G3 works to install 8.5 on any computer... for some reason, some are machine-specific and others aren't. Upgrading from 8.5 to 8.6 is a free download from Apple.
P.S. Don't quote me on the 68k emulation stuff... I am aware that it exists, and I've put some facts together to determine what it's like, but I am not really sure exactly how it works.

I have a 8500/150, and for a machine that slow, honestly I get by far the best results with BeOS. Check it out.

Why do you think the 8.6 of the G3 wouldn't install on your system? As far as I know, Apple only updates their system installers to work with newer hardware, they don't update it NOT to work with older hardware (except maybe for OSX and pre-G3 computers). I'd give that a try first...

i tried it, it says it won't run on this machine, and i even tried (which i knew wouln't work) a drag of the system folder from the G3 cd

I thought about this, i heard it was fast, but i dont know where to get it, or where to get software for it...if you could help me out with this i'd definatly try it out
...haha is it free, cuz i dont really want to spend money

You could try doing a clean install onto a G3 that is compatible with the CD. That way, a new system folder is created while leaving the old system folder there. Then just drag the newly installed system folder over to the computer, and then you can change the blessed system folder on the G3 back to your old one.
ah, be.com isn't up anymore to download, where do i get it from?!

There's
Edit: oops, nothing to see here.

yeah i thought about this before, perhaps i'll try it, i would like to give beOS a try though, i've always wanted to but never had a good reason, now i do
...though i will try this fancy number first
¿What was that?
[quote]8.6 would probably run faster than 8.1 because it contains more PPC optimization. You'll need more RAM to run 8.6 as opposed to 8.1 but with 96 MB you'll be fine. The thing is, even OS 9.2.2 has some 68k code, meaning that your PPC computer has to run 68k emulation in order to use it. Fast computers do this quickly, but slower, early PPCs are fairly bad at 68k emulation. Also, the faster your hard disk, the better emulation it'll do.

Oh......, my bad.
