Recommended DVD's?

I've been looking to expand my rather paltry DVD collection for a little while now, but I really don't know where to begin. So, what DVDs would you recommend the most?

(If it matters, I'm into stuff like drama, foreign films, and artsy-films, and the like.)

On a related topic: does anyone know if (most of) the works of Kurosawa are available on DVD?

You want a foreign drama? I just got Run Lola Run... it's really fun. If you are into slow films then it's not for you.

Run Lola Run is basically about a guy who has just lost 100,000 marks and he has just 20 minutes to recover it. His girlfriend runs out and tries to help him. It's very fast paced, and it also is non-linear in that it shows three different possible scenarios that either fail or are successful. And it's all in German, with English subtitles (but there's not much dialog, just a lot of thumping techno-like music).

any scorcese is a good buy, as the greatest living american director, even his worst stuff is good.

the dvd of david lean's lawrence of arabia is quite posh.

a good hong kong film is john woo's bullet in the head.

i thought it would be very action oriented, but it's more of a character study with action bits.

i don't have the dvd but i saw run lola run in the theatre and it is brilliant.

i agree with "run lola run". of kurosawa's films, "ran" and "yojimbo" are my favorite, though...ooh "dreams" is out on DVD? hmmm, have to get that now too. another japanese favorite of mine is <a href="http://us.imdb.com/Title?0092048"; target="_blank">"tampopo"</a>, very funny and strange, all about food in one way or another. you could also go for some anime, <a href="http://us.imdb.com/Title?0113568"; target="_blank">"ghost in the shell"</a>, <a href="http://us.imdb.com/Title?0119698"; target="_blank">"princess mononoke"</a>, <a href="http://us.imdb.com/Title?0094625"; target="_blank">"akira"</a> are all wonderful. for french films, <a href="http://us.imdb.com/Title?0082269"; target="_blank">"diva"</a> has it all...motorcycle chases, taiwanese music pirates, love, murder, and opera... what more could you want! ooh, and <a href="http://us.imdb.com/Title?0112682"; target="_blank">"la cite des enfants perdus"</a>... like a twisted fairytale.

if you're looking for something a bit different, i'd recommend <a href="http://us.imdb.com/Title?0247394"; target="_blank">"gumnaam"</a> (seen on the tv in "ghost world") a bollywood musical from the 60s, really funny, especially if you don't put on subtitles, and make up the dialogue yourself. same goes for <a href="http://www.generationkikaida.com/"; target="_blank">"kikaida"</a> a power-rangers-esque-monster-tv-series made in japan for the hawaiian-japanese market. my family watched it at our annual big party this year, provided great entertainment!

oh and can't forget documentaries-- <a href="http://www.livenudegirlsunite.com/"; target="_blank">"live nude girls unite!"</a> is a great one that i saw this past summer. its about the strippers working at the lusty lady in san francsico who unionized and started negotiating contracts and whatnot. really interesting, and very funny.

Fight Club...FIGHT CLUB...FIGHT CLUB!!! It's definitely not for everyone but it's probably one of my favorite, if not FAVORITE movies ever. The two disc DVD set is amazing and worth every penny. Also, the most dramatic movie that I've ever seen is called "Requiem For A Dream". It is an EXCELLENT movie that everyone should see. Trust me if you're into drama, check this one out. A really cool foreign movie is "Trainspotting". I ABSOLUTELY love this movie. It's about Scottish heroine addicts and if you're into black/dark comedy then it's right up your alley. If I think of anything else I won't hesitate to post.

Oh yeh and I recently saw the anime Spirited Away which was pretty cool although I think you'd have to go to an anime store to purchase an imported copy.

P.S. I know next to nothing about anime so take that for what you will. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

Tampopo is a very funny movie. Laughed my ass off watching that. Is that the one where the guy's wife gets off her death bed to make dinner? Oh man .. too funny.

I don't know if I'd want to own it though.

If you're into independent films with either recognizable stars or directors, I strongly recommend both "Requiem for a Dream" and "Y Tu Mama Tambien." Requiem is a hard hitting story about the perils of drug abuse. It should be shown to every high school kid in America (says Harry Knowles of AICN). "Y Tu Mama Tambien" is a Mexican flick by Alfonso Cuaron that's just amazing. I have both on DVD.

I should add that I have both UNRATED versions on DVD

    **** the MPAA

Magnolia and Mulholland Drive because both are so good and so weird that you'll have to see them repeatedly to figure out what the heck is actually going on.

Well, "Requiem for a Dream" DOES have Jennifer Connelly naked in it, so it gets 5 Stars right off the bat.

    I'd buy it.

That's the first film that came to mind..I love it but a lot of friends think it's completely whacko.

How about all the Coen brothers films..'Hudsucker proxy' a paticular favourite if relentlessly frantic film, and 'o Brother' is such a feel good movie as well as being beautiful to watch.

'The Horseman on the roof', a french drama set during a cholera epedemic in the early 1800's was brilliant as well.

'Il Postino' already posted is a wonderful film about a guy who falls in love and is taken under the wing of an exiled poet.

Have to try some of the ones I haven't heard of before..so Thanks for starting the subject Rampancy
