Looks like Sony and Foveon have some competition.

I'm not at all impressed with the SuperCCD HR announcement. It's more of the same. SuperCCD has proven to be barely any better than typical Bayer-pattern image sensors.

The SR announcement is somewhat interesting, but not remarkable...

Sniff Sniff... Whats that in the air? Fire? Could it be a flamewar approaching?

    hahaha

Actually, even DPReview had good things to say about the SuperCCD sensor in the S2 -- that it does indeed resolve more detail than comparable 6MP sensors -- not 12MP mind, but quite a bit more detail than a regular bayer pattern. However, they feel that this only happens at the larger sensor sizes (S2 is a nearly APS sized sensor afterall) and that the SuperCCD arrangement has little benefit for smaller sensor sizes.

    Here Eugene, here boy... <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

Actually, I'm very excited about this announcement as I'm looking for a digital camera as we speak and that 1/1.7 sensor size means that there will soon be a 5-7X zoom 6-12MP F602 replacement that will do quite nicely for my needs over the next 2 years. By that time 4/3rds and possibly even 35mm may just be affordable enough for a gratuitous self indulgence.

I don't want to read the article Is this a full frame sensor or not? Who is making a full frame sensor currently?

And when I say full frame, I mean in comparison to a full frame of 35mm film.

Only pro D-SLR's at the moment -- Canon has a 10.5MP model and Nikon has a 14MP model, I believe the Nikon uses a Kodak sensor.

Oh really, Nikon has a full frame CCD camera? See, my friend Alex and I were talking some months back about this. I've got about $3000 invested in a Nikon 35mm film kit right now, and I'd love to get a digital body to use with my lenses. Just, the biggest turn off is having a smaller sensor which means my lenses are effectively changed... like my 50mm becomes a 90mm, and so on.

Alex said Canon was the only one with full frame CCD sensors, and that Nikon didn't have any. Which model Nikon does, because I just might be budgeting for a Digital body later this year if they do...

um, as far as the Nikon digital camera body goes, the Nikon D100 is something i started looking at and then there is another one that will fit those same lenses; it's the Fuji S1.

whether or not it's "full frame" ccd i don't know but D100 has a reputation as a kick ass camera.

I know what will fit my lens system. I just want a digital body with a full 35mm frame CCD sensor. There are numerous things the D100 doesn't do that keeps me from wanting to plop down the money on one.

And when did Fuji start using an F Bayonet lens mount on their digital bodies?

Big Ooops from me, NOT Nikon, but Kodak using a Nikon body 9so all your Nikon lenses should be fine), the sensor is from Kodak, the model is DCS14N. Also, Canon has an EOS 1Ds full frame model with an 11MP sensor. And I believe contax has a 6MP full frame sensor announced too.

The Kodak isn't shipping yet, iDunno about the other two.

Is that the camera that looks like a Nikon F5, but has Kodak written down on the bottom? I saw that in the B&H Digital Photo Sourcebook they sent me. Looked cool. I kind of wish they could make that camera in the form factor of the D100/F100 though. That's kind of the reason I didn't want an F5 to begin with.

But that Kodak/Nikon thing has a full frame sensor, eh? That's kind of makes my groin tingly...

The only thing keeping X3-type sensors from taking over is time.

Foveon needs time to work out licensing.

Foveon needs time to refine the technology.

Foveon needs time for big partners to stop yapping in board rooms.

Even on those big full-frame 11 and 14 mp bayer-pattern sensors, you will still get inaccurate color, moire, and occasional jaggies.

Unless I had a ton of Nikkor lenses, I would definitely choose the Canon for its rugged body.

Nikon makes a damn nice body. I'd say they're pretty rugged. I've seen these things go through hell and back and still perform like they were new. I've got enough invested in Nikkor lenses, and on top of that, I just prefer Nikon to Canon. It's a dependability thing.

You'd think Eugene owned some stock in Foveon, we'll see. I think some of the issues with Foveon won't work thmselves out for a few years yet.
