Im thinking about buying a Powerbook from J&R Music and Computer World. Has anyone out there have? It seems they have a great deal on Powerbooks a 800 for 2099 and 667 for 1749.I went to other web sites or called Mac Zone, Mac Warehouse or other Apple Authorized Reseller. They told me they could not match that price and it must be some catch to it or something. My question is.... Has anyone out there purchased from them a Apple computer. I need to know before placing an order..Thanks for the help <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

I just bought a $59 pair of Sennheiser HD 270 headphones from them, through Amazon. They just arrived today.

I haven't bought anything Apple from them though. The only catch I could see is if somewhere in the fine print, they're actually selling refurbs instead of new units.

they are probably new... those seem to be about right based on the specs and stuff.

JandR is fine... their apple staff is a bit cocky and misleading at times to less knowledgable customers.

but they are fine...keep in mind you must pay tax.

By the way, looking at your post, those prices seem very normal, in line with other refurbs.

According to their site, you only pay tax if you live in NY. I don't see anywhere in their site if these are refurb units..So you think they are legit??

Well, they are 667 and 800 MHz PowerBooks, not the new 867 and 1000 MHz ones. So at the very least, they're leftover units that didn't get sold. Chances are they're refurbished. Most places are selling them for about the same price... $1700-$1800 for the 667, $2000-$2100 for the 800.

I didn't see anything in particular on the product pages that mentioned they're refubished, so they could be new units. J&R is an Apple Authorized Reseller, I assume if you just call and ask they'll tell you if it's refurb or not.

I bought a Performa from them a long time ago. It was my first mac and it was doa. At that time Apple was supposed to come and fix your computer if there was a problem. They came, said the mother board was fried and I'd have to wait three weeks for another. Well to shorten the story I called J&R and asked if they could make an exception and just give me a new computer. They were cool and said to just bring the original one back and gave me a brand new computer. I've also bought some cameras and audio gear from them without incident.

Keep in mind that 'Refurbished' isn't always a Bad Thing?. Most refurb units are returns that never saw any action, or any action of any serious sort. Back when you could still buy your mac in multiple colors... I can't tell you how many returns we got because it was 'the wrong color'. We'd put the item back in inventory, but we'd have to call it a refurb because the box was opened and I had to check out the system and make sure everything still worked.

Sometimes it could be as simple as a customer returning a laptop because it didn't work out of the box. So they give the customer a new machine and send the returned to the tech dept, who replaces the part and resells it as a refurb. Saw this happen a couple times to good customers where I worked.

Anyhow, don't always fear refurbished items.

Unless it says refurbished, it probably isn't.

at least the tekserve guys have a cool place and actually KNOW what they are talking about.

JandR dudes are cocky but actually dumb.... not a good combo.

i havent been to tekserve's new store.... is it still cool? still got the coke machine and everything? My major complaint with tekserve is how expensive they are for repairs/service but where else can you go and find an emate 300 battery? not many places

    Ugh . . . TekServe . . . PLEASE.

Yes, they still have the Coke machine. Big whoop.

Taking a number just to buy a damn accessory? Stupid. Painfully stupid.

Christ, the arrogance in the air in that place makes Saks Fifth Avenue feel like Wal-Mart.
